John Harmer Obituary

John Loren Harmer
1934 ~ 2019
Notwithstanding his oft-reiterated determination to reach 100, John Loren Harmer passed away on Friday, December 6, 2019, only 85 years into a life of service. Reflecting his lifelong resolve to be useful to God and his fellow man, he was pursuing several ambitious projects when interrupted by the accident that led to his death.
Born in Salt Lake City on April 28, 1934, to Earl Williams and Mabel Spande Harmer, John graduated from East High, the University of Utah, and the George Washington University Law School, interrupting his studies to serve in the British Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the U.S. Army. Elected to the California Senate in 1966, he was rated the most conservative member of the legislature-no small achievement at the time. Even so, he cultivated friendships across the aisle and earned the confidence of his colleagues, who elected him Republican Caucus chairman. Ultimately becoming lieutenant governor, he served with Governor Ronald Reagan-the subject of one of his books. Never afraid to champion unpopular but worthy causes, he devoted decades to fighting pornography-the subject of another book. He also authored several others.
On June 24, 1960, he married the lovely Carolyn Jonas in the Los Angeles Temple. Together they raised ten children: David (Elayne), Matthew (Stacy), Vivian (Mark Ellsworth), Christopher (Roshelle), Elizabeth (Keith Dionne), Joseph (Christina), Jonathan (Lynnelle), Amy (Jon Cox), Miriam, and Wendy (Micah McOwen).
In August, while scouting potential locations in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for a statue of Governor Reagan, John was leaning against a railing that broke, causing him to fall from an elevated platform onto concrete stairs below. For 15 weeks he strove mightily to recover, but not even his iron will and superhuman self-discipline could overcome the serious injuries, including traumatic brain injury, he'd suffered.
Throughout those weeks of intensive care and attempted rehabilitation, he endured severe pain. But from the day he fell to the day he died, he was accompanied every day by at least one of his 10 children, 37 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, or their spouses, and often several at a time. When he took his last breath, he was surrounded by children and grandchildren singing "I Am a Child of God."
They are his greatest legacy. Although John mingled with business, civic, and religious leaders throughout the nation and around the world, he asked to be remembered simply as husband, father, and grandfather. He deflected all credit for raising ten well-educated high achievers to his beloved Carolyn; but he was her indispensable partner in the enterprise. She predeceased him by four years; he missed her every day. Before his interment, all ten children gathered in the Bountiful Utah Temple, fulfilling his greatest desire.
In his prime, John inspired thousands at a time. But to innumerable people he's a hero for serving in small and quiet ways-as a scout leader, Sunday School teacher, home teacher, neighbor, example, and friend. Since his passing, hundreds have expressed thanks for his generosity and personal ministry. If he touched your life for good, share how on the tribute wall of Bountiful Lindquist Mortuary.
All who wish to honor and remember John are welcome to attend his public memorial service: Monday, January 27, 2020, 12:00 noon Mountain Time, Bountiful Second Ward, 650 South 200 East, Bountiful, Utah. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital in Malvern, Pennsylvania. His family also thanks the personnel of Paoli Hospital and Life Care Center of Bountiful for their care.

It was such an honor for us to get to meet Gov. Harmer when he participated in our Reagan Legacy Panel in Marshfield, MO in April 2019. He was such a kind man and shared his stories about working with then Governor Reagan. So sorry to learn about his passing. He left a great legacy on Earth and now is spending time in eternity. Thank you Gov. Harmer for touching our lives.

What a privilege it was to know and serve with John in my youth. He was a powerful example of a warrior for Righteousness. He was always steadfast and immovable. We will never forget his teachings about those things that diminish light in our lives and the effect is has on seeing things more clearly. He and Carolyn were such good examples of doing good. The affects of their good live on. So grateful to know the Harmers.

Governor John Harmer contributions to the ZHEJIANG KANGLAITE GROUP COMPANIES during his more than 20 years of dedicated and selfless service were many and varied. He was a major part of our expansion in the USA. His contributions to this company will not be forgotten and will be sadly missed by all of us who knew and worked with him.

Although Brother Harmer was very busy in the early 1980's traveling to Italy to work with political leaders there, he took the time to take a group of us youth to the Manti Pageant! It was a super fun trip. Brother and Sister Harmer had a wonderful busy household full of learning and happiness. One of my favorite memories was when I happened in just after dinner on a Monday and saw the whole family gathered together in a tight-knit circle in the livingroom with mother and father sitting next to each other holding the two smallest children in their laps, with all of the older children participating and listening intently. It was a beautiful sight! I learned so much from the example of this dynamic couple and their kind, friendly children!

I am so sad to hear about Johns passing. I worked at the rehab while he was there on the Birch Unit. I thought of him often, and wondered how his flight went after he left. I was sitting here watching the news and a video of Ronald Reagan was on, which made me think of John. So I looked up his name and his obituary came up. John tried so hard, even when he was so tired he never refused a therapy session. God bless all of you! Im sure he will be missed, he was a special man.

Just today my wife showed me John's obituary. I was surprised as I had no idea of his accident near Valley Forge. John and I shared several aspects of his life. We served together in the British Mission in the 1950s, we were students together at George Washington University Law School in the 1960s, and I connected with him at various other times when he was seeking to become the Lieutenant Governor of California and during his efforts in Utah with others fighting pornography.

The family of Loyd and Norma Ericson extend our depth felt sympathy at hearing of the passing of your wonderful father. During the years we spent together in Roseville he was a great influence in my life as my Priest's Quorum advisor, and a valued friend and confidant to my father.

He was a remarkable man in every world in which he walked. He leaves big shoes to fill for future generations.

We were so sad to hear about John's passing. He was a great man and wonderful neighbor. We were privileged to have the Harmers as next door neighbors for many years and have treasured memories of their faithfulness, kindness, strong testimonies of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and their love of family and country. We also remember many of Carolyn's delicious baked goods! John and Carolyn were a wonderful team and we are sure they are rejoicing together now. With love and prayers, Frank and Nancy Trythall

It has been a great honor to know and associate with John in the past several years. He was Lt. Governor of CA. when I first shook his hand on a college campus as a student in '72. Four decades later I enjoyed his indomitable spirit once again as an associate while he promoted causes meant to redeem human souls with his charity work. He set a great example, one that leads me to "never retire," but remember much good may be done as long as one draws breath. Grateful for this fine man and his example.

Hopefully, this photo of the reverse of a medal I created to honor Ronald Reagan might be an appropriate symbol, considering John's life, his journey toward his dear sweet wife, Carolyn, and eventually their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The caption on the banner, "A Rendezvous With Destiny" symbolizes all of these things and more, including John's dreams yet unrealized.

It was indeed an honor to become so close to John for these past several months. With my deepest love and respect, the time has come to salute but one more fallen hero.

Because we know and love you all, we send our condolences this way. What a remarkable father, gentleman, friend, and leader! Our lives and the lives of our sons were changed by the example and friendship of your parents. We loved serving with them in our callings, cheering at football games and Courts of Honor, and learning from and through them. Admiration and gratitude fill our hearts. John and Carolyn accepted the Lord's will and refinement and lived their testimony of truth and light to the very end. Their love and teaching and influence will continue. Blessings!
