Vera Millet Obituary

Vera Jackson Millet 1910 ~ 2007 After 97 rich and wonderful years, Vera Jackson Millet passed away on November 28, 2007. She was the oldest of five children born to Elvon L. and Adelia May Gee Jackson. She was born on July 27, 1910, in Provo, Utah, where she later attended the Provo public schools and graduated from Provo High School in 1929. She attended BYU for her freshman year and then attended Utah State University as a sophomore, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She completed her college education at Brigham Young University, graduating with a BA degree in 1934 with a double major in English and Drama. During the summers of her college years, she worked at the Grand Canyon as a waitress. She loved this work experience and especially enjoyed singing and dancing in the nightly performances for the guests. While at BYU she met Floyd Millet, a prominent football, basketball and track athlete from Arizona. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 13, 1934, by President George Albert Smith, and cherished one another for 66 years. Vera was a wonderful companion to Floyd throughout his coaching and athletic career and was always with him for the innumerable "away" games, meetings and other travels. She loved sports and knew teams, players and scores. She was the ultimate True Blue BYU Fan, seldom missing a football or basketball game, even in her 98th year. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life, and served faithfully in numerous stake and ward callings, especially in Relief Society, which she loved. She was equally faithful in supporting Floyd in his Church responsibilities, and frequently accompanied him on his assignments with the General YMMIA Board of the Church. Vera loved being with people and seemed to love everyone around her, and they loved her as well. She and Floyd enjoyed participating in a number of social groups and developed many life-long close friends through their association in these groups such as the Silver Slipper Dance Club, the Acorns, the Gourmets, the Cracked Egg Group, the Bonheur Club, BYU Women, several Sunday night groups, various bridge clubs and book clubs, and the "Brent Top Family Home Evening Group." Her greatest love was her family, three sons and a daughter. She was an accomplished homemaker and completely devoted to her children. She loved gathering her entire family together frequently for special occasions and was especially fond of organizing "programs" for these occasions. Vera is survived by her children, F. Jackson "Jack" (Marian) of Salt Lake City; Michael (Dixie) of Pleasant Grove; Robert (Elaine) of Orem; and Colleen (Gordon) Hanks of Draper; a brother, George Gee Jackson of Salt Lake City; a sister, Norma Carpenter of San Diego; 28 grandchildren; and 62 great-grandchildren, all of whom adore her! She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Floyd Millet; a brother, Elvon G. "Bud" Jackson; and a sister, Theda May "Teddy" Jackson Brockbank. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 3, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Oak Hills 9th Ward, 2000 North 1500 East, Provo. Friends may call on Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo, and on Monday, from 10 -11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery immediately following the funeral services. Condolences may be sent to: [email protected]

Our family lived next door to Sister Millet for two years, and in the 1-1/2 years that we've been "downtown" Provo, we have missed her warm smile and concern for our family. She was a wonderful lady of grace and charm and we extend our thoughts of comfort to you at this time.

Gary and I were saddened to hear that Vera had passed on. She was a lovely woman and had an incredible ability to be friends with people of all ages. We especially enjoyed hearing about the times when Floyd and Gary's father were coaching together. We will miss her.

I will miss you Grandma. You were always a positive, happy, beautiful and generous person and a great example to everyone. Everytime there is a "program" it will be dedicated to you! Tell Grandpa hi for me, I miss him too. I know you two are happy to finally be together again. I love you!
