Anthony Skedros Obituary
June 29, 1964 ~ March 23, 1997
It has been 17 years since my son, Anthony, suddenly passed away from an undetected heart condition at the age of 32. Over these many years, my friends, relatives, acquaintances, and patrons of my restaurant-some whom I barely know- have graciously donated to the Anthony Skedros Charitable Memorial Foundation. It is for this reason, and in view of my becoming a late octogenarian, I feel compelled to reflect on how grateful I am for the blessings of your heartfelt support. You have allowed me to create two yearly scholarship awards for the male and female exemplary athletes at Viewmont High School, the alma mater of my children and many of my friends. You have also helped me establish a scholarship at the Hennepin County Medial Center in Minneapolis, where Anthony trained as an emergency room physician. Scholarships have also been set at the Athletic Department of the University of Utah, where Anthony was a member of the track team. I also established the Anthony Skedros Memorial Golf Open. Not a fund raiser, but just a gathering of his friends to enjoy a round of golf as Anthony would have wanted.
Finally, the bulk of the funds are aimed at a larger project, which I hope to see while "I'm still kicking"--the replacement of the 64-year old Hellenic Cultural Center Building in downtown Salt Lake City. I foresee a new multipurpose center in which you will find the Anthony G. Skedros Memorial Gymnasium, which will be made available for basketball games, weddings and other celebrations.
Years ago, when in Minneapolis for my son's memorial, a woman approached me and said, Mr. Skedros I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but just a clerk in the E.R., but Anthony always made me feel so special. Yes, Anthony, you were special and everyone you met was special to you.

I "grew up" with Anthony at The Mandarin, and still think of him and your family often. A friend's 17-year-old daughter may have a similar condition, and it reminded me today of Anthony. The world is a lesser place without his big smile, good wit and charismatic presence. I still think of him--and all of your family--very fondly!

I miss my dear Friend Anthony always. A man that never spoke an unkind word of anyone, accepted everyone and full of respect and in turn was respected! He is/was a great man. Greg & Family,
You and your family have richly blessed so many. I grew up in a home just a few blocks from The Mandarin. I went to school with Taki and John at Viewmont and Anthony and I had several classes together at the University of Utah. I was shocked to hear of his passing at such a young age. He and I played "pick-up" basketball together numerous times and, as you know, he was very competitive but also a true gentleman. As a child I remember numerous trips to Mt View Pharmacy with my parents to pick up prescriptions and how friendly you and your staff were to me and to everyone else. Like so many, I have loved The Mandarin and have so many memories there. I want you to know that you and your family have influenced so many for good. God bless you the Skedros family!
