Derall Riley Obituary

Derall Lee Riley "Smoke" Our much beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend, Derall Lee Riley, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, February 22, 2005. He was born April 7, 1943 in Rock Springs, Wyoming to loving parents, Melba Louise Botero Riley and Derall Page Riley. He served in the LDS North German Mission and graduated from Brigham Young University where he met his sweetheart and eternal companion, Kathleen Arnold Riley. They were married June 6, 1966 in the Salt Lake Temple. Derall was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved the Savior, Jesus Christ. He found solace in reading the scriptures, listening to uplifting music and reading the Ensign magazine. He loved the issues with talks from General Conference and would catalog, on the computer, his favorite quotes. On the day he passed away we found it comforting to find his scriptures and the Ensign open on the dining room table. We rejoice that he is free from his mortal body so that he may again be in service to the Lord. Derall served faithfully in many callings throughout his life including Young Men's president, Stake High Councilor, Temple Worker and Bishop. He loved serving the people of the Bennion 14th Ward and enjoyed the sweet relationship he had with so many of you. We thank you for your tender kindness you have shown to Bishop Riley. Derall worked for many years in the insurance industry where he strived always to be honest and compassionate. He sacrificed much during his career so that his beloved family could stay in Utah close to their extended family. We appreciate his hard work and sacrifice in supporting his family and are thankful that he was able to retire in 2001. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathleen, who loved him unconditionally. A more perfect wife for our dad couldn't be found. He is also survived by his mother, Melba Riley; brother, Fred (Sharyn) Riley; his children, Michelle (Dan) Pierce, Kristi Miller, Derall (Whitney) Riley, Heather (Derek) Crowther, Sherri (Tyler) Pearson and Holly (Brian) Gunnell; 13 grandchildren whom he adored: Amy, Tyler, Courtney, Derall, Haylie, Grayson, Ashley, Whitney, Talmage, Abby, Jared, Brenna and Page, plus three more due within a month that we're sure he is playing with right now. He is preceded in death by his father, Derall Page Riley and his in-laws, Read and Maidie Arnold. We know there was a joyful reunion in heaven. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2005, 10:30 a.m. at the Bennion 14th Ward Chapel, 6540 S. 2700 W. The family will receive friends at a viewing on Friday, 6-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 S. Redwood Rd and Sat. at the church, 9-10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens. Dad, our tears and grief are for us because we are the ones left behind without your companionship. We also rejoice that you are now free of the body that brought you so much pain and proud that you endured valiantly to the end. We will miss your bear hugs, soft shoulder to cry on and listening ear. Thank you for your example, we love you so much and know that you loved us.

To Derall's family, I want to express my condolences to you. I am saddened to learn of Derall's passing today. He was a good man, driven by strong morals and values. Family always came first with him. I worked with Derall. In fact, I was his boss for a time. I had compassion for him and the pain he experienced. I also had great respect for him, as he was a true example to me and others of respecting and loving his family above all else. I am certain he will be missed. Thank you for your example Derall.

Dear Kathy and Family,

We can't even begin to express how you and Bishop Riley have touched our lives, We all remember feeling and knowing that we would never have a Bishop that would touch, and effect all of us as your dear sweet husband did. He loved all of us so unconditionally, Kathy what a greater tribute could anyone ever have than one who loved and didn't judge others, as did our dear sweet Bishop Riley did, he served in such a Christ like way. What impresed us the most was that he was the same at home as he was anywhere. He loved you and he loved all of us. Without a doubt he will be watching over you and your sweet family. And we all have been blessed to not only having the very best Bishop ever but a great great friend. We love you Kathy and we pray all of Heavens blessings will be poured down onto you and your sweet family at this time.

All our Love,

Stan, Sharon, Jace, Travis, Tanner, Marissa, and Jayden Roberts

My deepest condolences to the family of Derall Riley. I just learned today of his passing. I worked with Derall at Farmers Insurance for many years and remember fondly the times he and I would visit, not only about insurance, but BYU basketball and life in general. I consider among my best friends at work and a mentor in many areas of life and a virtuous example. 3/2/2005

Dear Kathy and family,

My heart goes out to you today. I know you loved this very special guy and so did we as a family. He got us thru some hard times both physically and spiritually. I will forever be grateful to him and you for all your love and guidance of our girls, Terra & Denice. I know that Derall was a great spiritual influence on both of our sons and their brides to get them married in the temple. We are deeply saddened at your loss but know that Derall is in a better place. It is always hard to loose someone so dear and my love and prayers are with you today. I have come down with some gomboo and wanted to let you know, anyway, that I am with you in spirit today.

Love and prayers to you all today and always.

Kathy, I want you and your family to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. I am so glad I had the opportunity and blessing to see both of you last summer while visiting in Utah. I have so many fond memories of serving with Bishop Riley in the Bennion 14th Ward. That time was truly a special time for me in the church and I think about it often. He will always be my Bishop. I want to thank you and your family for being such a wonderful example to my family. I know that the Lord will comfort you and continue to bless you and your family.

Sincerely,

Mark Jackson

The thing I remember most about my Uncle Derall is his smile and the way he hugged me. It felt the same as it did when Grandpa Riley hugged me, very loving. We'll all miss him, but I'm glad he's reunited with Grandpa. My prayers are with everyone.

Dear Kathy, I was so sorry to read of Darell's passing. I know that this is very hard for you, but I also know that the Lord will bless and sustain you through this difficult time. You can take comfort in the knowledge that you have of the plan of salvation and the hope of eternal life with this fine man. I am sorry that my work schedule at the temple will not allow me to attend either the viewing tonight or the funeral tomorrow morning. But please know that my prayers are with you and your family at this tender time.

Dear Kathy and family, I am so sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. He was quite the fun loving man. He loved to tell jokes that made everyone laugh, and there was a serious side of him as well as all of us who worked with him know. I enjoyed working with him at Farmers Insurance Group in the West Jordan office. I will miss him dearly and hope you and your family will be okay. Take Care. You are all in my prayers.
