Kumen Hurst "Kim" Jones

1946 - 2016
Nov. 12, 1946 ~ Jan. 3, 2016
Spanish Fork - Kumen Hurst Jones, 69, died Sunday (January 3, 2016) in his home. Born November 12, 1946 in Salt Lake City to Francis William and Gwen Hurst Jones, he was the youngest of six children: Norma Dee, Peggy, Marrilyn, Gordon, Paul and Kumen (Kim). He attended South High and as a young man, Kumen served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California. Upon returning from his mission, he met and was immediately smitten by Mary Ann Call while they were both students at Brigham Young University. They were married on August 23, 1968 in the Salt Lake Temple.
The next few years saw them stationed in Korea, Georgia, and Kansas while serving in the United States Army. Then a move to Idaho to finish his MBA, followed by a move to Mesa, Arizona where they would raise the six sons born to them along the way. Kumen tried his hand at several things, but finally found his home at Arizona State University where he taught until he and Mary Ann felt impressed to move home to Utah.
While in Utah, Kumen built a second career with The Ascent Companies. He always loved teaching, but he found his passion working with "the boys" at RedCliff Ascent. He often spoke about how much he felt a part of the work they do to help people.
In their forty-seven years of marriage, Kumen and Mary Ann were additionally blessed with beautiful daughters (he never viewed the girls as daughters-in law) and 21 wonderful grandchildren.
His two great loves were God and Family. He served faithfully in many callings throughout his life and had the opportunity to finish in his favorite calling, Gospel Doctrine Instructor. The last two things he got do before he was called home were to teach his class, then come home to a family dinner.
Kumen and Mary Ann spent a significant amount of time over the last two years at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The amount of care and compassion they showed day in and day out was remarkable and our family is eternally grateful for their help.
Kumen is survived by his wife Mary Ann Jones, his children Richard and Nicole, Francis and Rachelle, Thomas and Teresa, Brian and Jessica, Stephen and Lindsay, Cameron and Allison, and his 21 grandchildren. Sisters Norma Dee Ryan, Marrilyn Valenzuela, brothers Gordon (Susan), Paul (Jean), and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, and sister Margaret (Peggy) Walker.
A viewing will be held Friday January 8 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lone Pine Ward Chapel (989 South 2550 East, Spanish Fork, UT 84660). Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 9 at 11 a.m. at the same location. There will be a viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30 -10:45.
