Leonard Parkin Obituary
1941 ~ 2017
Utah artist, Leonard LeRoy Parkin, died March 21, 2017 at age 75, after an extended illness. He was born in Salt Lake City, UT, May 10, 1941 to Vern and Velma Parkin.
He grew up in Twin Falls, ID and graduated from Twin Falls High School. Immediately after graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Randolph as a photographer. During 1961-62, the Randolph's role was as the main pickup ship for astronauts Gus Grissom and John Glenn. Leonard was able to photograph the pickup of both astronauts.
After completing his commitment to the U.S. Navy, he returned home where he met his future wife, Cheryl Ann Vetsch. They were married and sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on May 22, 1965.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and his children: Heide (Russ) Larsen, Kym (Kendall) Smith, Robyn Parkin (Willie Johnson), Aaron (Shana) Parkin, Josh (Natalie) Parkin, Emma (Jim) Morgan, and Kirstie (Landon) Timothy; and sister, Carol (Albert) Bounous. Preceded in death by parents and son, Burke Parkin.
Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsdale Park Ward chapel at 3276 S. Hillsdale Dr., West Valley City, UT. Viewings are scheduled March 27, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State St., Murray, UT, and March 28th from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at the church.
Leonard will be interred in the Utah Veterans Cemetery & Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Rd., Bluffdale, UT.

I have a painting (print) hanging on my office wall, directly in front of my computer. Its a painting of a girl, a cat, and a boy gazing into the night sky, filled with wonderment at the vastness of the universe. I framed this picture years ago, including words below from all five verses of the hymn, If You Could Hie To Kolob. Its a treasured art piece of mine.
Today as I paused to be inspired by the majesty of the painting, I looked closely to find the name of the artist, -- Leonard Parkin @ 1998. I googled his name to learn about him and found that he died three years ago. My long deceased grandmother wrote a poem. The message of her poem reminds me of artist Leonard Parkin. The poem reads:
Sometimes, when day
draws to it’s close,
the departing sun casts back to earth
in fond farewell a
lovely afterglow.
I hope I shall so live
that when my sun of life
sits low,
I shall cast back
on those I love a
lovely afterglow.
I'm grateful for Leonard Parkin's God inspired talent, -- a beautiful afterglow of his life casting back to earth that inspires me each day.

I was saddened to hear of Lenny's passing. He had many talents. An artist, photographer and taxidermist come to mind.
