Donald Krohmer, 88, died Saturday afternoon, December 1, 2012, at Calvin Community of Alzheimer's disease. A memorial service in his honor will be held Saturday December 8, at 2 p.m. in the Calvin Community Atrium at 4210 Hickman Road.
Don was born on December 12, 1923 in Clearfield Iowa. After finishing school in Lenox, he moved to Des Moines where he met Patricia Jean Bridge. They married on September 2, 1945 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They had two children, Susan and Steve, and four grandchildren, Aaron, Brian, Kristen, and Anne. Don was very involved with his children, supporting Susan with her volunteer work and participating with Steve in Boy Scouts. One of Don's favorite activities was doing anything with his grandchildren.
Don's first job was with International Harvester, where he traveled to dealers throughout Iowa. Don then joined Plain Talk Publishing as a salesman, which allowed him to nurture his personal relationships with his customers, something Don loved to do.
Don was an Elder and active member of Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church for over 65 years. During this period, Don was a founding member and very active in Cross Ministries, a program designed to assist families and individuals in need. He was also very interested in writing, photography, and explored photo developing with his own dark room at home.
Don was preceded in death by his parents John and Mae Krohmer, and sister Barbara Nelson. He is survived by his wife Patricia, his children Susan Krohmer, and Steve and his wife, Janet Krohmer; four grandchildren, and five nieces.
The family wants to offer a sincere thanks to the staff of Calvin Community and Hospice of Central Iowa Care Services for their exceptional long term care of Don. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cross Ministries or Calvin Community. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
