James "Jim" Guthrie
Urbandale
Jim, 86, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Kavanagh House on 56th St. A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 11 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with burial and military honors to follow at Chapel Hill Gardens. The family will greet friends Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church.
He served in the Navy during WWII and retired from the Rock Island Railroad as a switchman after many years of service.
Jim was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Urbandale American Legion and East Gate Masonic Lodge.
He will be remembered as the neighborhood Mr. Fix-It who also enjoyed fishing, playing cribbage, pitch, pinochle and was an avid Cubs fan. Jim was known for his love of spicy foods and his homemade jalapeno peppers and horseradish. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jim is survived by his three children, Montine Guthrie, Norman Guthrie and Susan (Monte) Bonnicksen; three sisters, Mary Ware of AZ, Eloise (Rich) St. John of TX and Clarice Fales of Des Moines and sister-in-law, Gladys Mulder of NE. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy and two brothers, Bill Rohlf and Jack Guthrie.
Memorials may be directed to his church or to the family.

Condolences from the "Omaha-side" of the family...Jim was one of a few left these days. Oddly, I was fishing the Des Moines River on this day...one of the Families' favorite waters I hear. His Legacy will carry-on...15-2; 15-4! Go Cubs!
