Indianola - Alta Catherine (Probasco) Cross, 94, passed away June 10, 2018. Graveside services will be held at the Chariton, Iowa Cemetery at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 13, 2018. Catherine was born in Appanoose County, Iowa October 17, 1923, the eldest of seven children. She was named for her two grandmothers, Alta Jane Probasco and Nancy Catherine Sorrell. Her family lived on Missouri until Catherine was in junior high, at which time they moved to Chariton.

Catherine graduated from Chariton High School in 1941. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles William (Bill) Cross in May 10, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas, on the day Bill received his Navy wings. After the war, the couple returned to Iowa to make their home in Chariton. They had two children, Pamela Edith Cross Robins and Dan William Cross. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1994. Bill passed away in 1998 and, in 2009, Catherine moved to The Village in Indianola to be near her daughter.

Catherine was employed by Levis Insurance Agency in 1959, retiring after 30 years. She was active in the Chariton Christian Church (Disciples), teaching Sunday School and serving as a deacon and elder on various committees. Catherine had a strong faith and found joy in serving her church.

Catherine enjoyed nothing more than a good family get-together and loved and cared for her family her entire life. She enjoyed seeing her many nieces and nephews and keeping up with their families.

Catherine is survived by her daughter, Pam Robins (Steve); her grandsons, Brent and Matt (Emily); her great-grandchildren, Ethan and Lauren; her sister, Anna Ruble; her daughter-in-law, Karen Cross; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Cross; her son, Dan; her parents, Cleona and John F. Probasco; and five siblings: John Elton, James David, Max Edward, Nellie Mae (Wright), and Robert Franklin, who died in infancy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chariton Christian Church (Disciples), 1100 Ilion Avenue, Chariton, Iowa 50049.
