Ankeny - Berneice Lucille Maher (Nelson), age 103, passed away on August 6th, 2018 at Mill Pond Senior Living Center in Ankeny, Iowa.

Berneice was born on March 30, 1915 in Lake Mills, Iowa to Nels and Emma (Rusley) Nelson. After graduating from Lake Mills High School she spent a year in Minneapolis, MN then returned to Lake Mills and in the fall of 1935 enrolled in the American Institute of Business (AIB) in Des Moines, Iowa. After leaving AIB, she was employed as a Secretary at Montgomery Ward and in charge of their Human Resources department for 12 years. Later, Berneice was employed with Andrew's Realty and then after employed by LeMar Koethe, Inc. where she later retired from.

On January 3, 1948, she married Thomas Maher at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. They had one son, Michael N. Maher. Thomas and Berneice loved dancing, traveling and were active members of the Beaverdale VFW. She also loved singing all throughout her life and also enjoyed the past 20 years attending the Urbandale Senior Center playing cards, taking trips and meeting new friends. She and Thomas also spent several months during the winter in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas.

She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas Maher, parents Nels Nelson and Emma Rusley and four sisters: Stella, Gail, Judy and Cora; and one brother, Norman Nelson. She is survived by son Michael (Rita) Maher, grandaughter Amber (Beau) Crawford and great-grandchildren Autumn, Ava and Braden; all reside in Minneapolis, MN.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 9th at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at the Glendale Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Dr. Questad and hospice staff at Unitypoint Health as well as the staff at Mill Pond Senior Living Center. In leiu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. John's Lutheran Church. Online condolences are welcome at
