David was born March 5, 1942, in Madrid, IA, to Frank and Julia (Polich) Mataya. After high school, he enlisted in the Marines and was stationed in California and Okinawa, Japan. After returning to the states, he met and married Linda Fitch on May 18, 1968, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church. He worked for Firestone for 30 years, retiring in August of 1996. After retirement, Dave enjoyed woodworking and being the town's handyman-he was always the one his neighbors called upon for help fixing just about anything. He was always quick with a smile and a joke, even if it was the same joke over and over. David rode many miles on the High Trestle Trail between Ankeny and Woodward, stopping for breakfast or to chat along the way. He will be fondly remembered as the cyclist blaring the train horn as he rode along.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Linda; parents; brother, Ralph Mataya; and sister, Christine Hillier.
