DAVID "MIKE" MILLER

David Michael Miller, 67, was born June 23, 1943 to Jack E. and Margaret L. Miller of Chariton, IA. After graduating from Chariton High School in 1961, he received his undergraduate degree with double majors in chemistry and mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1965. He worked for many years at Swift and Co. and attended graduate school at the Illinois Institute of Technology, completing all but the residency requirements for PhDs in organic chemistry and biophysics as well as advanced work in Finance and Operations.
Following his successful educational endeavors, Mr. Miller moved to New York with Swift & Co. to take one of his patents commercial. While in New York he served on many industry- wide committees in his area of interest, protein modification and utilization, including chairing corporate wide efforts in protein research. He went on to hold numerous US and foreign patents in the area of animal feeds and protein modification.
After his years with Swift and Co. he returned to the Chariton area to own and manage Ja-Le Dairy Farms and its successor Miller Dairy Sales, which became one of the states largest dairy sales and consultation operations. For over 30 years, Mr. Miller held various elected positions the Lucas County Health Center, including treasurer and chairman to the Board of Trustees. He was also selected to serve as Vice Chairman of the Iowa Hospital and Health Systems governing Board of Trustees. In 2007,he was awarded the Iowa Hospital Associations Excellence in Governance Award. In addition to these service activities, Mr. Miller was a great lover of books and a gifted photographer.
He was united in marriage July 16, 1966 to Margaret Pierce. He is survived by his wife; sons Jon (Amy) of Des Moines, Matthew (Emily) of Austin, TX and Christopher of Santa Cruz, CA; Grandson Pierce; sister Patricia (Ron) Krahn of Indianola and parents. He was preceded in death by daughter Kathryn.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to Lucas County Health Center.
Services are 1 p.m., Monday, July 12, 2010, at Fielding Funeral Home. Family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010. Interment is in the Chariton Cemetery. Pallbearers are Mark Pierce, Matt Miller, Chris Miller and Jon Miller.
