Donald J. Duggan, 80, of Waterloo, died Monday at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of natural causes.

Mr. Duggan was born July 26, 1932 in Dubuque, Iowa to Donald L. Duggan and Olive "Mickey" McGinnis. He married Mary J. Kelly of Waterloo at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on August 25, 1956. She died March 28, 2009.

Mr. Duggan graduated from Loras College with a bachelors degree in education. He later earned his Masters degree in school administration from the University of Northern Iowa. Mr. Duggan began his teaching career at Transfiguration School in Wauconda, Illinois before returning to Waterloo to teach and coach at Our Lady of Victory Academy. In 1959 he began a 30 year career at Jack M. Logan Intermediate School first as a teacher, then as an assistant principal and finally serving over ten years as the principal through 1989. He then served as principal of West Intermediate School from 1989 to 1992. In 1993 he served as an education coordinator for the Waterloo Schools before retiring in June 1993.

Mr. Duggan was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Elks Club for over 50 years, served as a lector and Eucharistic minister at St. Edward's Church and was active in its Resurrection choir and was a member of the Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa board of directors.

Survived by: two daughters Patrice of Council Bluffs and Kathy (Tim) Conlan of Des Moines; four sons Dennis (Suzanne) of Cedar Falls, Jeff (Janet) and Steve (Renee) both of Waterloo, David (Kim) of New York; seven grandchildren Ryan, Tim and Danny of Cedar Falls, Maureen, Joe and Kyle of Waterloo and Jake of New York; three great-grandchildren Keenan, Kylen and Kael; his sister Debbie Duggan of Des Moines; and his brother Jack (Karen) of Savannah, Georgia.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on 300 West Ridgeway Ave., Waterloo, where there will be a 4 p.m. 4th Degree Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Memorials to St. Edward Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
