Justus "Jay" Legvold


1913 - 2010
Justus Everett Legvold, the son of Hans and Caroline (Henderson) Legvold, was born July 6, 1913, on a farm near Frost, MN. He attended rural grade school and Bricelyn High School. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1939.

Jay married Alice Coltvet in 1941, she died in 1975. He then married Jodella (Olson) Nelson in 1976.

Following graduation from ISU, he was hired as a farm manager for Travler's Insurance Company in Marshall, MN. He then entered the U.S. Air Corp during W.W. II and served as radio instructor most of his duty and the last months of service were in the 8th photo-reconnaissance in the Japanese army occupation. Following his W.W. II service, he farmed near Eagle Grove, Iowa and for a period of time was a salesman and manager of a fertilizer business.

Jay served on various boards including Wright County Farm Bureau, Extension Service boars, Soil Conservation Service, Eagle Grove Area Ag-Urban Committee, Eagle Grove Planning & Zoning, Eagle Grove Area Foundation for the Future and church deacon and church council president.

Jay passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove, at the age of 97 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Ole Legvold and sisters, Frances Romerein and Mildred Remensnyder.

Survivors include his wife, Jodella; sons, Steven of Apple Valley, MN and James of Vincent, IA; daughter Kathryn Marotz of Sandy, UT; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Judine and Ronald Nelson and their families and sister Charlotte Legvold.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Paul Stone officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.
