Leo A. McElroy, 77, of 1506 Swanson Ave., died at 4:28 p.m. June 9, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born January 13, 1936 in Ottumwa to Arthur Duncan and Alta Gilliard McElroy. He married Glenys Judd on June 13, 1953.

Leo attended Ottumwa High School before moving to CO. In 1958, he returned to IA to live in Burlington, where he worked for Iowa Southern Utilities. He relocated to Ottumwa in 1960 to continue working for Iowa Southern Utilities until 1979. He then became a union representative for IBEW Local #735, which became Local #204, until retiring in 1999.

Leo was a member of IBEW Local #204 and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #347. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, boating, camping and woodworking. His favorite time was his annual week long family camping trip at Lake Rathbun.

Surviving is his wife, Glenys; his three children, Becky (Don) Rupe of Eldridge, Doug (Lisa) McElroy of Ottumwa and Julie (Steve) Rogers of Norwalk; seven grandchildren, Amy Clayton, Tony (Elisabeth) Rupe, Rachel McElroy, Kaitlin McElroy, Kaylee (Stephen) Onnen, Kristi Rogers and Tayler Rogers; four great-grandchildren, Jayden Clayton, Tayja Clayton, Jacob Rupe and Kayla Rupe; a sister, Martha (Bob) Yochum of Mesa, AZ; sister-in-law, Rosa McElroy of IL; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ernest McElroy and Harold McElroy and a sister, Francis Stephenson.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with his grandson, Tony Rupe, officiating. Cremation will follow the services.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society, PO Box 1149, Ottumwa, IA 52501.
