Linda Bode Obituary
Linda Bode

Des Moines - Linda Mary Bode, died August 8, 2018 with her daughter Lori by her side. It was just weeks after being diagnosed with a second cancer, acute leukemia. She was first diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2017 and had nine months of good results. She persisted.

Linda was the third of eight children born to Regina and Calvin Bode on their farm near Algona, Iowa. They were a poor, hardworking Catholic family and Linda was driven, opinionated and independent from day one. She excelled at school, loved math, and was the first in her family to go to college. While on her trajectory to success, she ended up pregnant. She had two choices, adoption or try and hide the pregnancy and hope the insurance company where she was a low level clerk wouldn't find out and fire her. She persisted, working to provide for her daughter while trying to succeed in the business world. She became Director of Rates for Individuals and Families for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa and after giving her everything to work, at the age of 50, she was laid off in a corporate restructure. Linda persisted. After trying banking and other odd jobs, she then obtained her realtor license working for Universal Realty and then RealtyXperts where she was a top seller. Linda was a workaholic, it was her passion, and she continued to manage properties until the day she died.

Linda loved road trips, old westerns, crossword puzzles, gambling, fishing and sports. She played high school girls' basketball when it was still thought "potentially harmful for girls to engage in strenuous activities". As an avid spectator, she favored Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Linda was private, terse, honest, prudent and treated everyone the same, with respect - including children. She was unashamedly always comfortably herself, warts and all. She had a great sense of humor and everyone laughing until the end. She accepted others and loved them deeply, though she was reticent to show anything emotional. She was a strong, unique, modern, unintentional feminist who followed her own path, always. She will be missed greatly.

Linda is survived by her only daughter, Lori Bode and Lori's partner Pierre Turpin and granddaughter, Manon, in Berkeley, California. She has three remaining sisters Norma, Eileen and Emily.

A gathering for friends and family will be held from 5-8pm, Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Iles Westover Chapel. A time for sharing memories will begin at 7pm. Memorial contributions may be directed to: www.thesecondopinion.org. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com.
