Lowell Rees Irwin Obituary
Lowell Rees Irwin

Ames - Lowell Rees Irwin, an avid crossword fan, put down his pencil, whistled a tune and said, "I'm done." Rees died at home in Ames, Saturday, July 28, 2018, after living 27 months with cancer. His caretakers called him "miracle man."

Born June 21,1950 in Carroll, IA to Keith and Annabelle (Bowen) Irwin, Rees was the third child of four, holding the designation of the only boy. He had to put up with three gregarious, bossy sisters. He grew up in Lake View, attended grade and middle school there, probably wearing his Captain Video hat. Later, the family moved to Sac City where he graduated from Sac City High School in1968.

As a young adult, he worked as a lifeguard and swam the length of Black Hawk Lake (also at the age of 50). One summer, he was a crew member on a commercial Alaskan fishing boat with his Bowen cousins. He studied at the University of Iowa where he met his wife Vikki Lee Carnine. Rees was drafted into the Army. Later, he completed his degree at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. One daughter, Emma Lee Carnine-Irwin, was born to this union. They lived in Lake View until Emma was school age. The family moved to Ames for Vikki to study for her doctorate degree at Iowa State University.

Rees commuted to West Des Moines to work for Iowa Network Services (INS) and retired in 2011. His many friends will remember him as a kind, gentle, caring man who had a dry sense of humor. Crossword puzzles, golfing, fishing, Iowa Cubs baseball, reading, classical music, bicycle rides in Iowa and Washington were his special interests. He had a knack of choosing perfect gifts for the recipients.

Left to share fond family memories of Rees are his daughter Emma Lee of Des Moines; sisters Jane (Richard) Croll, Sara Beth (John) Thompson of Lake View; sister-in-law Michelle (David) Witte of Sac City; nephews David (Amy) Croll, children Katelyn and Benjamin Rhys of Urbandale; Michael Rees (Jen) Bauer, children Gracie and Abigale of Jensen Beach, FL; nieces Kristin Ann Bauer, children Annabelle and Hayden Kunert of Ankeny; Carrie (Alex) Van Quathem, children Avery and Erin of Urbandale. Rees is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vikki (July 30, 2003), parents-in-law, Bill and Marge Carnine, sister Ann Irwin Stock, nephew Brian Bauer.

Public graveside services for Rees and Vikki Carnine-Irwin will be held Saturday, August 18, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Wall Lake Cemetery, Wall Lake, IA with a celebration of life luncheon following at the American Legion Hall, 310 Main, Lake View, IA.

Memorials may be sent to: Lake View Historical Society Museum, P.O. Box 483, Lake View IA 51450.
