Margaret E. Mehl Obituary
Margaret E. Mehl

West Des Moines - Margaret Mehl died February 4th of lung cancer at Edgewater Retirement Home. She was born March 27, 1941 at Parker Store in Audubon County to Odetta and Raymond Rendleman. She grew up in Exira, Iowa and graduated from Simpson College with a degree in English. Years later she received her masters and PHD from Drake University and was proud her dissertation received statewide recognition of best in category. In 1963 Margaret married Tom Mehl. She and Tom raised three daughters on an acreage just outside the Des Moines city limits where the family participated in numerous "Mother Earth" projects, enjoying the large garden and numerous farm animals. After twenty years on the acreage, the family moved to the old forested area of Des Moines and began enjoying the many activities available in the city. Margaret particularly enjoyed the family membership at Central Presbyterian Church, the book club, swimming and yoga groups and the Red Hat group. Margaret was an avid reader, a lover of words and a stickler for proper English. Her teaching career spanned nearly all levels of education from pre-school to post graduate studies.

Margaret is survived by husband Tom Mehl, daughters Laura Van Cleve (Rick), Karen Mehl Berkeley (Jon), and Mary Voeller (Terry), grandchildren Caroline Van Cleve, Catheryn Van Cleve, Rachel Berkeley, Zachery Berkeley, Audrey Voeller, and Jacob Voeller, brothers; Douglas Rendleman and Neal Rendleman, and sisters Mary Gilchrist and Catheryn Irvine.

There will be a memorial service at 11:00 am Saturday February 10, 2018 at Central Presbyterian Church 3829 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Following the memorial there will be a luncheon with the opportunity to visit with friends and family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to (1717) Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines), Wesley Life Hospice or Central Presbyterian Church.
