Mervill L. "Roy" Moore, 82, of Des Moines, passed away at his home on August 4, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 10, at Sheridan Park United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, at Grandview Park Funeral Home.

Mervill was born in Des Moines to Mervill and Lucy Moore on September 23, 1929. He grew up in Des Moines and attended East High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954, during the Korean War. While in Korea, he wrote many letters to the love of his life, Phyllis Beener. They were married on October 29, 1953.

Mervill was a long-time employee of Meredith Corporation, working there from 1948 until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of Sheridan Park United Methodist Church, Sheridan Park Neighborhood Association, Des Moines Woodworkers Association, and The American Association of Wood Turners. He enjoyed golf, photography, working with flowers in the yard, wood working, reading, and spending time with his family. He loved seeing the beauty in everything.

Mervill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis; four daughters, Debbie (Joe) Madonia of Des Moines, Diane (Jim) McBurney of Des Moines, Donna Cooper of Pleasant Hill, and Denise (Rob) Baetsle of Altoona;

three sisters, Doris Parsons of Des Moines, Gerry (Donald) Owens of Indiana, and Judy (Larry) Lancaster of Norwalk; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, and a son-in-law, Bob Cooper.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
