Richard "Dick" Hirschauer

Des Moines - Richard (Dick) Edward Hirschauer, 85, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2018 from complications with cancer at 3801 Grand Retirement Community in Des Moines, Iowa. Dick was born to Clare Alma (Mueller) and Raymond Thomas Hirschauer in Des Moines Iowa on November 18, 1932. Dick graduated from Roosevelt High School in May 1950 and graduated from Drake University in 1954 with a degree in Marketing. Dick met his wife Betty at Drake. They were married on May 14, 1955 at First Lutheran Church in Moline, Illinois. Dick and Betty resided in Des Moines and West Des Moines, Iowa where they raised two sons, Tom and David, along with their pet dogs.

Dick worked as a food broker in Des Moines. He was particularly proud of his accomplishments in selling french fries for Lamb Weston. When Dick retired he worked as ranger for Wakonda and Des Moines Golf and Country Clubs. He also worked as an usher during the March spring league baseball season for the Phillies. His favorite job before/during retirement was working for Valley High School running the game clock for varsity football games for 43 years. Dick also enjoyed going to his favorite watering hole each afternoon for a cold Bud.

Dick loved to travel with his wife Betty in Europe and spending the winter and spring months in St. Pete Beach FL.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife Betty on August 17, 2017 and his parents Clare and Ray. Dick is survived by two sons: Tom (Sandy) Hirschauer of West Des Moines IA; and David (Sharon) Hirschauer of Odessa FL; and six grandchildren Alec Hirschauer, Chase (Ali) Hirschauer, Weston Hirschauer, Jonathon Hirschauer, Elizabeth Hirschauer, and Peyton Hirschauer.

Visitation will be on Saturday, August 18, 2018, from 9:30 am-11:00 am at McLaren's Funeral Chapel, 801 - 19th Street, West Des Moines, IA followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 am. A Private Family Committal will be held after the memorial service at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines IA. Memorial contributions can be made by check to "Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity" in memory of Richard Hirschauer or donate online at gdmhabitat.org.
