Urbandale - Sally Hummel, 88, died Monday, December 31, 2018, at Unity Point Methodist West Hospital, from complications of Alzheimer's. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019, at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Sally was born December 28, 1930, in Des Moines to William and Louise (Reed) O'Meara. She married William Gerhart Hummel on September 3, 1947. They made their home in Urbandale where they raised their eight children.

Sally was sustained by a strong spirituality expressed through the Catholic Church. Bill and Sally were charter and active members of St. Pius X Catholic Church. They were long time members of Urbandale Golf and Country Club. Sally and Bill also enjoyed their summers at "the cabin" on Girl Lake in Longville, Minnesota where they made many memories with family and friends, enjoying the beauty of the lake, fishing, golfing, and hearing the call of the loons. Sally was known for keeping a spotless home, cooking delicious meals and creating perfectly stitched quilts. She loved holding babies, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sally is survived by her children, Mark Hummel of Urbandale, Susan (Larry Pace) Hummel of Columbia, MO, Kevin (Cindy) Hummel of West Des Moines, Perry Hummel of Des Moines, Lynne (Alan Abuhl) Hummel of Elkhart, and Janet (Kelly) Broderick of Clive; son-in-law, Gordy Hannan of Urbandale, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, William, son, Robert "Bobby" Hummel, daughter Marcia "Marcy" Hannan, granddaughter, Gretchen Hummel, daughter-in-law, Jane Hummel, and her siblings, Charles Bennett, William Bennett and Kathryn "Karlene" O'Hara.

The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Friday, January 4, at Iles-Westover Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church, Bickford Cottage in Urbandale or the . Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bickford Cottage for their exceptional and loving care of our parents.

Sally will always be remembered for her strength, positive attitude, beautiful smile and her sparkling blue eyes.
