Steven Mosena Obituary

Steven Gary Mosena

Steven Gary Mosena, age 69, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Sunday, December 20th from the effects of COVID-19 with his family by his side.

Born August 8, 1951 in Cedar Falls, IA to George & Norma Mosena, he was the oldest of three children. He always said his life was perfect until his two little sisters came along 10 years later - although everyone knew he adored them. He said he had the perfect childhood as a Mississippi River rat and had tons of tales of his river adventures with his friends in Hamilton, IL.

Steve married Laura Iutzi on August 29, 1970 and they had two beautiful daughters.

He held many positions in his life, but his favorite was being a farmer with his father-in-law and brother-in-law in Hamilton, IL for over 14 years. When the farm crisis hit he left farming and worked as the youngest grocery store manager for Giant Foods. He earned several degrees: Board of Governors - Agri-business, Specialist Degree from Western University, master's degree from Northeast Missouri State in accounting, and a PHD from Drake University in Global leadership. He used his education and skills to become a schoolteacher at Schuyler County Missouri and then at Indian Hills Junior College in Ottumwa, IA where he also became a school administrator. He then moved to Ankeny, IA to become the Chief Information Officer for the State of Iowa.

Steve married the love of his life Bonnie Rosa-Mosena on 8/30/2003 and moved to Clive, IA. He retired at 59 to become a "professional" grandfather which he claimed to be the best job he'd ever had. Bonnie & Steve bought a camper and had many fun camping excursions with their family. He was by far the best husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend you could ever ask for and our hearts are broken that he won't be here to spread his joy among us.

He bought a 1951 Bentley in 2010 and spent the last 10 years lovingly restoring it. Unfortunately, it never got completed but his grandson Dakota Rupe is taking the Bentley back to Arkansas where Steve found it and will restore it for him.

Steve was a man of great faith and enjoyed attending Lutheran Church of Hope and his large men's bible study class. He loved going out to breakfast with the guys after study so they could solve the problems of the world. He also loved going on long fishing trips with some of the guys from this class to Louisiana and Canada.

Steve is proceeded in death by his parents, father-in-law, and grandparents. He is survived by his two daughters; Elizabeth (Wade) Jorgensen, Dover, AR and Jennifer (Ty) Ware, Ottumwa, IA, step-daughter Michelle Rosa, Mason City, IA, step son Travis (Pam) Rosa, and step-son Brenden Ginn, 13 grandchildren, his two sisters Maureen (Mike) Rench, Bushnell, IL and Michelle (Dave) Fitch, Bushnell, IL, numerous brother and sisters-in-laws, and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines, IA at 11am on Saturday, December 26. Masks and social distancing will be required. Here is the link to view the livestream of the funeral: https://hopeonline.tv/specialevents

Memorials can be sent to the family at 8845 Franklin Ave, Clive, IA 50325 to create a college scholarship in Information Technology at Indian Hills Community College in his name.

Steve was a very nice man and co-worker. He had a great sense of humor and would listen to anyone's situation. He would have been a wonderful pastor! So sad to see him leave this place so early. My deepest sympathy to his family. Steve--I know you are in Heaven so watch over the rest of us.

I was a colleague at Schuyler R-1 Schools in Queen City, Missouri. Steve was a pleasant guy. I remember teasing him about his long-term memory. He occasionally forgot appointments. We chuckled about it.

My step-father came into my life in 2003 and loving my Mom like he did was a wonderful site to see. He became such a important person in all our lives. Anything and everything anyone ever needed, I never heard him say no to anything. He was funny, a great story teller, kind, generous, a wonderful companion , great company and loved us all. We are so grateful he was a part of our lives. We miss you Steve.

Steve was a great leader in his time at DHS. I always admired his commitment to DDM staff. Somehow he always had time to check-in with everyone even those who where located on a different floor of the Hoover building. He was always a bright moment in the day.

A favorite and funny guy. Steve and I became friends immediately and spent many hours on the holidays over the years playing on Grandpa Mosena’s truck in the back yard and eating turkey legs. We have remained friends. I will miss him and the laughter he brought to all of us. Goodbye CUZ. Cousins are our first friends❤
