Johnston - Vera, 96, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2018 at Bishop Drumm in Johnston. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 12 at DSM First, 2725 Merle Hay Road with her funeral beginning at 3 p.m. Her graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at Glendale Cemetery.

Vera Evelyn was born August 7, 1921 in Marion county, Iowa to Dwight and Agatha (Smith) Rose. She grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton schools. She married Ernest Messick on April 27, 1941 in Clinton, Iowa. While he served in the Navy, they lived in Idaho. They then returned to Newton, moved to Springfield, Missouri for work, and then eventually settled in Des Moines. Vera was a homemaker for many years, before working for the state as an administrative assistant.

Following her and Ernie's retirement, they spent time doing missions in Belgium. Then they spent many years traveling the country in an Airstream. The last several years, Vera has resided at Bishop Drumm in Johnston.

Vera had a wonderful gift for hospitality and enjoyed brightening people's day by sending them cards.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Paul Rose.

Vera is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sharon "Sherri" King; granddaughters, Emily (Giles) Hash and Molly King; sister, Lila Walker; and several nieces and nephews.
