He was born in Arkansas City, Kansas in 1921. After graduating from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in business in 1943, he served three years in the Army Air Corps, stationed in the south Pacific during the war. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in animal science at Iowa State University where he met Dorothy Schlensig, whom he married in 1948.

He received a citation from the Statehouse Press Corps as Outstanding Representative of 1967.

After his term as Speaker, Mo was elected Iowa state treasurer, a position he held through 1982. He headed the Iowa Public Employee Retirement system until 1991. Maurice was my Dads' younger Brother. After my Dad's death we didn't see each other that often over the years. My most enduring memories of him was sitting on his lap at my Dad's funeral. I was only 3 but I remember that well. He always remembered my Birthday and called me every year. I was so fortunate to visit him at his farm last year. He was a real gentleman and I will miss him. Mo was a great mentor and friend. He was one of the most principled public servants I have known.
