After his wife's death he moved in with his parents until his daughter finished high school. He entered the Army on October 24, 1951, at Fort Belford, VA. He went to Tokyo and then to Korea where he spent two years building bridges, roads and airstrips and also worked in demolition. After returning home he spent six years in the Army Reserves. Wayne had many different jobs. He worked the night shift at Penn Dixie, a feed store, mattress store and at Bethel Mission for five years until he retired at the age of 62.

Wayne is survived by his daughter, Joyce and special friends, Brian Turner and Jan Stegeman. Memorial contributions may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
