Tsuruko "Kim" Sciachitano Obituary
Tsuruko "Kim" Sciachitano

Des Moines

Kim passed Friday, May 30, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A private memorial graveside service will be held at Glendale Cemetery at a later date.

Kim was born in Hokkaido, Japan and was a trained nurse during WWII. She was also a trained dental assistant who worked at the US Air Force Hospital at Misawa AFB in Japan during the Korean War, during which time she met Vic Sciachitano, her future husband. They married on April 28, 1960, at the American Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. Throughout her husband Vic's 21 years of service in the USAF, Kim was a devoted wife and mother who lived in Japan, the U.S. and Italy among other places. She was so proud of becoming a U.S. citizen on May 1, 1973. After retiring from the USAF Kim and Vic made Des Moines their home for over 40 years.

Kim loved gardening, bird watching, and caring for her home and yard. She was an avid reader of the Des Moines Register and regularly sent her daughter, Marian, articles of interest. Kim was a huge fan of Iowa Public Television and her favorite programs were Nature and All Creatures Great and Small. She also loved watching Jeopardy and listening to talk radio into the wee hours. Kim will always be remembered as a strong, independent, kind and loving wife and mom. She will be deeply missed.

Kim is survived by her husband of 54 years, Victor, her daughter and son-in-law, Marian and Rory of Pullman, WA and her sister, Jane Davison of Kent, England.

The family would like to thank Mercy Hospital's, ICU, Critical Care Team of doctors and nurses for their amazing care. We also want to thank Mercy's pastoral care ministry, especially Deacon Dave O'Brien and Helen Roberts for all their prayers and support. Last, but not least, Vic and Marian would like to thank neighbors, John Chambers and Alma Betjovic for all their support and friendship during this difficult time. Online condolences will be welcomed at
