Art Buechler passed away peacefully from natural causes on Tuesday afternoon, August 5, 2014 at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa, at 88 years of age.

Arthur Leroy Buechler, son of Ralph and Esther (Wilson) Buechler, was born on the Buechler farm on October 22, 1925.

Art graduated from Boone High School in June of 1943. Art was drafted into the service and enlisted in the Army Air Corp, going to Navigator's school until he was discharged at the convenience of the United States Government when the war ended.

He attended Iowa State College until February 2, 1947, when he married Martha Jean Lebo, daughter of Everett and Matilda (Dyer) Lebo, at the First Baptist Church in Boone.

They started farming on the Ralph Buechler farm, later purchasing it, and in 1995, they received a Century Farm Award. Besides being an active crop and livestock farmer, he had his own business of commercial spraying with a high-clearance sprayer for many years, covering a three county area. He was also an active member of the Boone County Farm Bureau, serving as treasurer for many years. In 2006, at the age of 80, he retired from farming. In 2012, Art and Martha moved from the farm into Westhaven Community, enjoying a very active social life and finally their retirement together.

Art was baptized in the Mineral Ridge Baptist Church and later joined the First Baptist Church in Boone in 1945, serving as a Deacon and on many other Church boards, including teaching Sunday school, supporting the Baptist Youth Fellowship, and always taking the kids on long hay rack rides each fall. He was active with the Boy Scout Troop of the Baptist Church, worked at Dayton Oaks Baptist Camp for many years, built houses in Boone with Habitat for Humanity, and served with the CROP program.

In 1961, the Boone Jaycees selected him as "Outstanding Young Farmer" and he went to the Iowa State Convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On November 11, 1976, the Kiwanis International Club awarded him "Layman of the Year", for leadership in his church and community, having strong character and deep Christian Faith.

His parents; 3 sisters and 5 brothers preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Martha of Boone; 2 daughters Barbara Sue Fosdick and husband Wade "Bud" of San Diego, California and Mary Elizabeth Page and husband Boling of Round Hill, Virginia; a son Mark Arthur Buechler and wife Melanie of Columbia, Maryland; 7 grandchildren Patrick Halpin and wife Angela of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Jennifer Halpin Hoffman and husband Randall of Alpine, California, Jonathan Buechler and wife Shannon of Crofton, Maryland, Nathaniel Buechler of Baltimore, Maryland, Alina Buechler of Columbia, Maryland Alicia Page and Ryan Page of Round Hill, Virginia; 6 great-grandchildren Parker and Ashton Halpin of Simpson, South Carolina, Cordel and Kai Pere of Alpine, California and Vanessa and Isabella Buechler of Crofton, Maryland.

The family wishes to thank Westhaven Community for all their care and support given our great father in his final years.

Art's wishes were to be cremated.

A private family memorial service will be held with Rev. Jerry Bertelson officiating.
