Raymond was born in Altoona, Iowa on November 1, 1921 to Raymond and Agnes Hutchison. He attended school in Mitchellville and Prairie City, graduating from Prairie City High School in 1938. After farming for a few years, Raymond entered the service with the 8th Army Air Force. He served from 1942 to 1946, both in the United States and England.

Following his return from overseas in 1946, he married Edith Mae McFadden; they were married nearly 66 years. Raymond is survived by his wife, Edith, three sons, Robert (Dawn), Runnells, Iowa, Larry (Lori), Duncanville, Texas, and John (Colleen), Sacramento California, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

After completing his military service, Raymond returned to farming for approximately 15 years in Prairie City and Bondurant, Iowa. He then went back to school, and graduated from the American Institute of Business. Soon thereafter, he went to work for Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in Des Moines, where he worked as an adjuster until his retirement in 1983. After retiring from Fireman's Fund, Raymond continued to work part-time as an adjuster for the Bradshaw Law Firm in Des Moines.

Raymond and family moved to Carlisle in 1962, where they lived until 1991. While in Carlisle, Raymond served as mayor and member of the school board and library board. In 1991 Raymond and Edith moved back to Prairie City, where they remained until moving to the Newton Village, Newton, Iowa in October 2010. They lived in Newton until his death. Raymond was a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1947. He was also a member of the Lions Club in Prairie City.

Raymond was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and friend. He had many hobbies and interests, including traveling, gardening, fishing, hunting, playing bridge and woodworking. He was a gifted carpenter, woodworker and wood carver, and often entered his carvings at the Iowa State Fair. Raymond had a wonderful sense of humor, which stood him well as a farmer, insurance adjuster and dealing with his family. Coburn Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Raymond and his family.
