Nick DePhillips, 87, passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Celebration will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 7 at St. Augustin Church, 545 - 42nd St., Des Moines. The family will greet friends Monday, May 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Rd., Des Moines with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m.

Nick was born on April 29, 1926, in Des Moines and was a lifelong resident and maintained close ties to his father's home town of Cariati, Italy. He was a WWII Army Veteran and was proud of his military experience and his care received at the VA. In his younger years, Nick worked in his family's business in grocery and restaurants and operated the DePhillips Supper Club. Nick also was a sales executive with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company "Yellow Pages" where he excelled. Wanting to spend more time with his young family, Nick left this career to start DePhillips Brothers Inc., DBI, with his brothers Leonard and Tony. Later, Nick ran a successful custom home building company and was involved in Real Estate.

He was an active member of St. Augustin Church and enjoyed spending time at the church. Nick had a strong Catholic faith and was very proud of his family and his Italian heritage. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Lela; sons, Dennis (Elaine) DePhillips and Randy (Edie) DePhillips; one grandson, Alec DePhillips; two siblings, Leonard (Annie) DePhillips and Joanne (Sam) Sample as well as many nieces and nephews and extended family in Cariati, Italy. Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Jennie; brothers, Francis, Tony, Pete, Milo (Nick's twin) and Mike DePhillips and sister, Mary Rose Thomas.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the church.
