ROBERT ANDERSON Obituary

Born February 20, 1928, beloved husband of 56 years to Jacquelyn Anderson, devoted father to Eric, Jill and Kurt Anderson died peacefully at home, early morning Thanksgiving Day, November 27th. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, brother-in-law, two grandchildren and 20 nieces and nephews. Born in L'Anse, Michigan, Dr. Anderson graduated from L'Anse High School in 1946 as Valedictorian and President of his senior class. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University in 1949 and his medical degree from U of M in 1953. After his internship at Hurley Hospital, he joined a private practice in Flint where he developed a new program in sports medicine that provided free physical exams to high school athletes. The program was later adopted by the American Medical Society. Bob returned to Ann Arbor in 1966 and served as Director of Student Health Services at The University of Michigan from 1968 to 1980. "Doc A" was an Athletic Department Team Physician and served on the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at U of M from 1967 to 1998. "Doc A" was also instrumental in developing the first drug testing program for the NCAA. In 1980 he started his own private practice in Andrology and served as an FAA Aeromedical Examiner. Dr. Anderson received the President's Challenge Award from the National Athletic Trainers' Assn. in 1988 and was honored by a "M Club" of greater Detroit Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1997. He touched countless lives and was loved by his family, neighbors, friends, colleagues and patients. He will be remembered fondly and missed dearly. Following a terminal diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis in March of 2006, Bob and his family appreciated the dedicated support from Arbor Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Arbor Hospice (734) 662-5999. Visitation is at Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Tuesday, December 2 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and a Memorial Service is Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at The First Congregational Church.
