Dorothy Maxine Coston-Jones
Dorothy Maxine Coston-Jones 97, my beloved mother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 26, 2020 in Smyrna, GA. Born January 21, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her young son Gregory; first husband Beauford William Coston and second husband Dr, Robert Nathaniel Jones; Parents Solomon and Johnnie Belle (Graham) Smith; Step-father Arnold; Siblings Johnnie Belle Smoot, Samuel Smith and Ernest Smith.
Dorothy earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Journalism from Wayne University and was one of the first black female policewomen in the city of Detroit. She earned her Master of Arts in Corrections Administration from University of Detroit and worked in Corrections for many years, ending her career as the Director of Treatment at Detroit House of Corrections (DeHoCo), now called Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility.
She was a Diamond Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority member, a volunteer at the Detroit Institute of Arts, belonged to Ladies on the Move at Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ in Detroit, and was an avid bridge player.
She leaves behind a daughter, Sybil Coston-Bishi, Son-in-law, Nurudeen Bishi, and numerous relatives and friends.
