JAMES J. "JIMMIE" TAMBURINI

TAMBURINI JAMES J. "JIMMIE", passed away on Sunday, February 13, at the age of ninety-three. He resided in St. Pete Beach, Florida. From 1944-1966, Jim Tamburini played first trumpet for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. During this time, the symphony made many recordings under the direction of Paul Paray. Today these recordings are deemed some of the finest in the classical repertoire. Tamburini taught winds and brasses privately in the Detroit/ Windsor area with many students performing in symphonies, jazz ensembles and as soloists throughout the country. He was also on the staff at the University of Windsor where he founded the Windsor Community Orchestra in 1984. During his youth, he studied at the renown Curtis Institute of Music where he was friends with and a fellow classmate of Leonard Bernstein. They remained life long friends. As a student substitute in the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, Tamburini played under the conductorship of Eugene Ormandy and Arturo Toscanini. After graduating from the Curtis Institute, Tamburini was chosen by Leopold Stokowski to tour South America with the "All American Youth Orchestra." He also joined Dr. Fritz Reiner as first trumpet with the Pittsburg Symphony. For over fourteen years, Jim Tamburini conducted the Mount Clemens Symphony Orchestra. The symphony grew under his directorship where his creative leadership was greatly admired. The symphony's cabaret concerts were highly anticipated by the Mount Clemens community. A celebration of James Tamburini's life will be held at the St. Timothy Catholic Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Friday, February 25th, at 11:30 a.m. He leaves a daughter, Lynn Tamburini Dobbins, son-in-law, David Dobbins, of Haymarket, Virginia, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Interlochen scholarship fund for trumpet students or to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia are greatly appreciated.
