JANINE DENOMME Obituary
DENOMME JANINE Died at her home in Chicago on May 17th at the age of 44. The cause of death was cancer. She was an active Catholic who served her parish in many capacities. In 2007 she learned about the Roman Catholic Women Priests which, despite the official ban, has ordained over 100 women worldwide. Janine was ordained in April of this year. While she was preparing for her ordination Janine was diagnosed with cancer. Her blog about her experience at CaringBridge.org attracted hundreds of readers moved by its profound spirituality, honesty and humor in the face of struggle and pain. Born in Detroit, Janine grew up in a large family that was very involved with the church. She did her PhD in American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She came to Chicago through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and stayed there to work as a teacher at St. Scholastic High School and later at DePaul University. Most recently she was the Director of Youth programs for the Center for Halsted. She was active in the church throughout her life. Her family and friends watched her struggle between her belief that she was called to ministry and the Catholic Church's refusal to open ordination to women. Although her decision to be ordained took courage her family and friends recall Janine as a gentle spirit who preached love, compassion and reconciliation. Along with her partner Nancy Katz, Janine she is survived by her parents Robert and Mary Joan, her brothers Joe (Patti), Dave (Linda) and Mark, her grandfather Earl and nieces and nephew. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, at Nativity Church in Detroit.
