Age 78, of St. Clair Shores, January 21, 2009. Rev. Dr. Lyda was the first African-American woman to open a psycho therapy practice in Birmingham, Michigan in 1967. She traveled the world as a Missionary, served as the Director of Lyda Hunt Institute of Intensive Psycho Therapy in Southfield, and was the former Pastor at First Baptist Church of Ferndale, John Wesley AME Zion Church in Detroit and Hope Christian Ministries in Ferndale. Loving mother of Rev. Maurita Lyda-Tucker (Gregory Tucker). Also survived by sister, Ruth Holmes, 15 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and eight nephews. Visitation Friday 1 - 9 p.m. at Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Directors, 500 W. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale (1 ½ blocks west of Woodward) and Saturday 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Service 12 Noon at First Baptist Church of Ferndale, 1841 Pinecrest (corner of 9 Mile).
