THE REV ROBERT LEIGHTON MILLER

retired Episcopal priest, age 84, December 13, 2008. Beloved husband of Lucy Ann (Sistare) for 62 years. Loving father of Meredith Whipple, Wendy Miller, Janice Webber, Gail (Fabian) Wambsgans and Tim (Norma) Miller. Dear brother of Richard (June) and the late Grace (Cal) Skinner. Remembered with love by eight grandchildren, Robert (Erin) Webber, Kelly (Nick) Evanoff, Nicholas (Kelly) Raley, Elizabeth Raley (Dorian Compo), Jillian (Dusty) Hall, Melissa Miller (fiance Billy Kreger), Tim Miller and Jessica Miller; four precious great-grandchildren, Kayla, Anya, Milla and Katherine; several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends and colleagues. In 1945 Bob graduated from Springfield College, MA and in 1947 graduated from the Episcopal Theology School, Cambridge, MA, where he entered the Deaconate. In 1948 he was ordained to the priesthood. He later earned a masters degree from Wayne State University. Bob started his ministry as Curate at Grace Episcopal Church in Kirkwood, MO and continued as Rector at Trinity, Flushing, St. Andrew's, Detroit and St. Martin's, Detroit, MI. In 1962 he was an exchange priest in Merrow Parish, Guildford, England for a year. He was involved in the Cursillo movement for over 30 years. Bob was, until his death, a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Plymouth, MI. He was Chaplain for the Detroit Fire Department for several years and Director at Episcopal Family Camp Chickagami near Alpena, MI many summers. He marched on Washington for Civil Rights in the 1960's. Bob was dearly loved by so many and will be remembered for his humor, love for people and the Lord. He is the focal point of many special memories including summers in Vermont, family gatherings, and his beautiful signing voice. He was a history-buff, lover of gadgets, Winnie-the-Pooh, England, the Sierra Club, and classical music. He was interested in everything and everyone during his entire wonderful life. Visitation will be Thursday, 2-9 p.m. at Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, 280 South Main Street, Plymouth, MI 48170 (734) 453-3333. Service at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 574 South Sheldon Road, Plymouth, MI 48170 (734) 453-0190. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St. John's Episcopal Church.
