Robert D. Skelton, 68, a member of Granbury First Baptist Church, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, in Fort Worth. Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wiley Funeral Home. Interment: Acton Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials: Friends for Animals, 2885 Fall Creek Highway, Granbury, Texas 76049. Mr. Skelton was born Aug. 21, 1942, in Houston to Robert Fredrick Skelton and Sarah Clyde Smith Skelton. Robert grew up in Swainsboro, Ga., and was involved in music from elementary school until his death. He played trumpet for four years in high school and was first chair trumpet in All State Band in Atlanta. In his senior year of high school he started writing and recording under the name Bobby Skel. He signed on with the Dick Clark Traveling Band Stand in 1965-1966. Robert's records were played on WLS Radio in Chicago and three of his songs were in the top 10. Today his music is in the Macon, Ga., Music Hall of Fame. His music carried on through Rinky Tinks as owner and operator for the past 11 years. Robert was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors: Wife, Jo Ann Skelton; children, Sheila Ann Newman and fiance, Keith, and Tammy Lynn Anderson and husband, Joe; grandchildren, John Robert Newman and Brittany, Ashley Ann Frederick and husband, David, Katie Lynn Anderson and Clayton Dwayne Anderson; great-grandchildren, Christopher Avery Frederick and Gray Edwin Seward; mother-in-law, Inez Meeks; and many friends.
