Lendon Stewart "Lindy" Sheffield Obituary
Lendon "Lindy" Stewart Sheffield, 93, joined his two best friends, his wife of 64 years, Gwen, and Jesus, on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013. Celebration of life: 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at All Occasion Party Place, 6765 Rendon Bloodworth, Fort Worth, 76140. He donated his body to UT Southwestern Willed Body Program. At a later time, he will be laid to rest next to Gwen under a tree in the Rendon Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rendon Fire Department, 12330 Rendon Road, Burleson, Texas 76028. Lindy was born on July 7, 1920, in Rush Springs, Okla., but his family soon moved to Rendon. He graduated from Fort Worth's Paschal High School in 1938, where he was a track champion, and also starred in track at The University of Texas until 1942, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned a highly decorated navigator in B-24s and B-25s. He married Gwen, his "Canadian songbird sweetheart," on Oct. 14, 1944. Lindy lived a full life in Rendon helping everyone around him. He was a founder and lifelong active member of the Rendon Fire Department, member of Deer Creek Lodge 510, and builder, supporter and member of Retta Baptist Church and Rendon Elementary School. If he had an opinion about anything, others soon heard it-and he had many. Always working for the good of the Lord, his country, his family and his community, Lindy gave far more than he ever took. Lindy loved a good game of dominoes and even kept his "Scrabble Happy Hour" with Gwen after her death by playing from her chair when it was her turn. He couldn't be kept indoors when anything needed planting or picking. "Lindy projects" often defied description or understanding. He once turned an entire hillside into the Texas map using bluebonnets for our rivers, cactus for our West and pines for our East. He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife, Gwen, in 2008; brothers, Eldon and Bob; and sister, Ann. Survivors: He is survived by brother, Ted and wife, Thelma; sisters, Dee Helm and Billie Morrow and husband, Twain; children, Carolynne Bobbitt and husband, Gordon, Chuck Sheffield and wife, Patty, Suzie Hopson, and Linda Crum and husband, Don; granddaughters, Kelli Rodda and husband, Jason, and their children, Reese and Molly, Leslie Paxton and husband, Orsen, and their children, Lilly and Orsen V; and his extended loving family of nieces and nephews.
