Melba McLaughlin Wright Obituary
Melba McLaughlin Wright, 86, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at home following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fort Worth All Church Home. Melba was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Fort Worth to Bernie Marshall McLaughlin and Ruby Pevehouse McLaughlin. Melba graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1945. As a young wife and mother living in Harlingen, Melba commuted to Edinburg several hours a day for three years to attend Pan American University, where she graduated cum laude in 1960, with a B.A. in elementary education. She earned a master's in education and counseling in 1970 from Texas Christian University. Melba taught in the Valley several years before moving back to Fort Worth. She remembered her work there with children from low-income families as among her most rewarding. Melba taught fifth grade at South Hills Elementary, and later was a pioneer in the Fort Worth ISD Follow Through initiative. She served as a middle school counselor at McLean Middle School for 27 years. She retired in 2005 at the age of 78. Her service in public education spanned 45 years. Melba was an active member of the Fort Worth Woman's Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a life member of the National Education Association and a member of the North Texas Counseling Association. Melba was sought after as a neighborhood maven in her Overton Park community. She was devoted to family and relatives, and kept up with innumerable students, friends and acquaintances. She will be dearly, dearly missed. Melba was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Lynn Wade Wright. Survivors: Son, Dr. Marshall L. Wright and wife, Cheryl, of Colleyville; brother, George Coombs and wife, Jacque, of Naples, Fla.; sister, Patricia Monaghan of Comanche, Iowa; niece, Denise Tuggle of Fort Worth; and nephews, Cary McLaughlin of Fort Worth and Mark McLaughlin of Grapevine.
