Walter Farris Martin, 97, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014. Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at Handley Baptist Church, 6801 Church St., Fort Worth. Interment: Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation: Noon to service time Saturday. Walter was born in Bridgeport, Oct. 11, 1917. He grew up in East Fort Worth and attended Polytechnic High School. During high school he worked in a candy store making candy, and worked various jobs after graduating in 1935. He met his wife, Margaret, in 1939 and they married on Christmas Day 1941, at the Baptist Soldier's Center in San Antonio. He had already enlisted in the Army in February 1941 and served during World War II as a signal corps officer until Dec. 2, 1945. As a sergeant he earned the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and an American Defense Citation in the American theater and the Asiatic/Pacific theater. Together he and Margaret raised four children. Walter will be remembered as a godly husband, father and friend who worked hard to provide for his family as a letter carrier for 26 years. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and the American Legion. He reared his family in faith and dependence on the Lord. As part of his Christian living, he was faithful in church attendance, serving in church administrative activities, and later worked in recording church services on tape to share with shut-ins. Being an able mechanic and repairman, he helped widows and others in need of various repairs. He lived by example for his children and grandchildren, and spoke words of counsel when he felt they were needed. He was called "Daddy Martin" by many who were not kin to him, but loved him for his kindness and generosity. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 69 years, Margaret, in 2011. Survivors: Sons, Richard and wife, Renea, and Robert and wife, Linda; daughters, Gayle Armstrong and husband, Craig, Mary Dayle Corley and husband, Lee Allen; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
