Jack Garrett passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015. Funeral: was Tuesday at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel, followed by interment. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mental Health Association or the ARC. Jack was born in Fort Worth on Aug. 16, 1922, son of Charles and Lena Daniels Garrett. He was the youngest of five children, with two brothers and two sisters. His father died in a construction accident when he was 3. He attended Polytechnic High School and was a star football player at center, receiving the most Valuable Player Award during his senior year. In high school, he developed his lifelong love of golf. Jack attended Tarleton State University but left after his first year to join the Coast Guard and served from 1941 to 1947, traveling around the world and attained the rank of quartermaster second class. His most memorable moments were serving on an ice breaker in the Great Lakes and piloting a ship backwards up a river in India. While in the Coast Guard, Jack met and subsequently married Elizabeth Cecilia Zelnik of Lorain, Ohio. They were married on Feb. 18, 1947, and after his honorable discharge moved to Fort Worth. Forgoing a career in professional football, Jack was a hard worker who held multiple jobs in sales, electrical installation, including starting his own company while working full time for Texas Electric Service Co. Staring as a lineman, Jack eventually retired from TESCO as a chief distribution dispatcher. When not working or coaching Little League baseball, Jack loved to play golf with his brother Brian and friends. Following his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed many years of travel around the world. However, he was known for always whistling when he was returning home. His wife, Elizabeth, passed away in 1991. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard "Boots" and Brian Garrett; and sisters, Maureen Bellows and Pearl Athans. Survivors: Sons, Josh and wife, Kathy Garrett, and Richard Garrett; daughter, Elizabeth "Betts" and husband, Parker Hoover; grandsons, Richard "Rich" Garrett and wife, Ellie, Daniel Garrett and wife, Tracy, Cole Garrett, Ryan Hoover and wife, Rosalinda "Rosie" and Mitchell Hoover; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
