Gino S. Zangara passed away Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, after a brave battle with cancer. Service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at St. Rita Catholic Church, 5550 E. Lancaster Ave. A military memorial service will be planned for late March. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, plants or food, please donate to your church or favorite charity in Gino's memory. Gino was born in Detroit, Mich., on Feb. 9, 1929, and was raised in Passaic, N.J. Gino served in the U.S. Army until 1947 and then the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps until 1968. He served our country during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, earning the World War II Campaign, Korean Service, China Service, Vietnam Service, and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross medals. And he was also the recipient of three Purple Hearts. Gino proudly finished his military career in the Texas State Guard, where he retired as brevetted brigadier general. Survivors: His wife, sister, children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
