Dick, a finer man I've never known, and better friend I've never had. Remember our meetings and trips together following my Round-the-world in 1981? Our trip to Phillips Oil Co. in Oklahoma where we made our presentation for support for another flight in 1983 in a replica "Winnie Mae" from Oshkosh, was a memorable time together. ... Our founding of the Wiley Post Institute plans took up several hours of our time. Our shared enthusiasm was a high-point for me. ... That followed your visit to my office at the Moffett Field Naval Air Station when I was stationed at the NASA Ames Research Center. Your article about the MLS system research being done there was another stellar piece of your writing. ... Working with you on the Pilot's Audio Update was a professional success and absolute pleasure. ... And then the RTW Presentation in Washington DC to the I-56 former cadets allowed me to make new friends like Ed VanAkin and David Wilson, but also allowed me to see again your amazing talents for putting together Power Points which made the visuals unique. ... But most of all was the joy we shared in Orlando with Ed & Joan VanAkin when we spent time with David Greist, now 100, with whom you flew in the Air Force, and with whom I went to Barrow, Alaska where he lived with his missionary doctor-father in 1935 when Wiley Post & Will Rogers were killed there. Those memories are golden. ... Believe me, my friend, you will be missed. You were a light in my life, not merely because we were born in the same year, but because I looked up to you as an example of what a real man and true friend is like. There is so much I want to tell you when I see you again in a place where you will not be in pain. I will join you before too many years, so have the landing strip ready. My wife & I thank you & Nancy for your great hospitality when we were in your home. Our love and admiration go with you. God bless.
