1992 - 2019
Rubén Castilla Herrera, died on April 6, 2019 in Columbus after tending to the vegetable garden that brought him peace and joy. An Ohioan since 1987, Rubén was born in Seguin, Texas and raised in Oregon. The child of farmworkers Pura Castilla Herrera and Alfredo Torres Herrera, he is survived by his partner, Nicholas Pasquarello; daughters, Rita Herrera, Naomi Chamberlain, and Marisa Garverick Herrera; son, Ruben Herrera, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Angie Wilhelm Herrera; son-in-law, Joshua Chamberlain; son-in-law to be, Preston Osborn; ten grandchildren; and siblings, Rosemary, Raul, Rudy, Roland, and Guido. A celebración de vida in honor of Rubén's life and legacy will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 3 p.m at Broad Street United Methodist Church, 501 East Broad Street, Columbus, followed by time for food and community. We also invite all those who are interested and able to join us in gathering at 2 p.m. to march from the Ohio Statehouse to Broad Street United Methodist Church prior to the service. Rubén's family is deeply appreciative of the financial and emotional support from all of the people from his community. Arrangements have been completed with JERRY SPEARS FUNERAL HOME with CREMATORY, 2693 W. Broad St.

I just learned of the passing of my friend from years ago. We worked together in the 80's as the only woman and only Hispanic worker in the Oregon Highway Department Sign Shop. We had many hours to visit and learn from each other as we worked. I went on to work with the Union and Ruben went on to college at Willamette University and eventually to seminary and life in Ohio. We lost touch but I have always thought of him with great affection and respect. He was a good friend in a time of trouble and he continued on in his work and ministry after we moved on to different lives. My deepest condolences to his family and colleagues. And prayers for his peaceful rest in a job and life well done. Rest well my friend.

De parte de Los Pioneros de Oregon nuestras sinceras CONDOLENCIAS a la FAMILIA HERRERARubén vive en nuestro corazón!
Recuerdo de haber conocido parte de la Familia Herrera en 1969. Visité a su FAMLIA durante la noche cuando yo levantaba firmas para apoyar el primer Programa Bilingüe en Oregon. Al entrar a su casa vi a Rubén. Aún era noche, la familia me recibió con la misma cortesía de siempre Amistad Herrera. Tomé las firmas necesarias y me despedí.
En el verano del 1971, Rubén fue uno de mis asistentes durante la Escuela de Verano. Desde entonces reconocí su interés en ayudar a la comunidad; igualmente como toda su familia.
La manzana no se cae lejos del árbol- The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree Este proverbio mundial se puede considerar con todo respeto durante el evento que no se esperaba. Que bendición de haber entrado a la VIDA ETERNA en la misma manera que la conoció su padre Alfredo Freddie Freddie también andaba atendiendo su jardín igualmente. En una manera espiritual, se puede considerar como viaje similar y MAS IMPORTANTE que Rubén y su papá Alfredo tenían cualidades y metas similares; sembrando semillas para el futuro.
La trayectoria Herrera representa una luz de HUMANIDAD cual sirve de -ejemplo- para la Comunidad Hispana. Las cualidades sobresalientes de la Familia Herrera son: Sinceridad, Respeto, Amistad, Interés en ayudar al prójimo, y GOZAR de la vida a cualquier momento. MUSICA era uno de sus pasatiempos de Rubén y toda la FAMILIA!
OREGON contiene una huella importante planteada por toda la Familia Herrera. Con AMISTAD, ORACIONES Y AGRADECIMINETO . Permanece Rubén en Oregon vía sus virtudes!

We, the families of The Compassionate Friends, send you our heartfelt condolences. The Compassionate Friends is an international grief support group for parents, grandparents and siblings who have suffered the heartbreaking loss of a child. Our only mission is to provide comfort, hope and support to every family experiencing the death of a son or daughter, brother or sister, or grandchild, and to help others better assist the grieving family. We meet twice monthly in Columbus from 7-9 PM on the second Tuesday of each month and from 2-4 on the fourth Sunday at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1479 Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229.
