John Christie Obituary

Christie, John
1950 - 2019
John Steven Christie, 69, died suddenly at his Upper Arlington home on Saturday, October 5, 2019. John was preceded in death by his wife Linda Margaret Christie and his parents Robert Samuel and Sara Jane Kennard Christie of McConnelsville, Ohio. Growing up in McConnelsville, OH stayed with John as he never forgot his roots. John would repeatedly tell his friends the story about growing up in an early 1800's stage coach inn on Main St., and being able to identify every make and model of car just by looking at the tail lights as they drove through town. He was a Boy Scout, a halfback/defensive back of his high school football team, and 4-year letterman in four sports. He was also one of the first inductees to the Morgan High school's Hall of Fame. John was a tireless civic, community and business leader. After becoming a member and vice president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Miami University and graduating with a bachelor degree in Business Administration, he went on to Emory University to pursue his Masters in business. He and Linda were married in McConnelsville, Ohio and considered living in Atlanta an adventure. Banking brought them back to Ohio, first in Cincinnati and then to Columbus. Soon, John was tapped to become the President of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce at age 32 because of his ideas and passion for the city. He would be a strong advocate for businesses during that time and made many trips to Japan to help build the auto supply network in the region. He worked hard to connect the public and private sectors to help advance the city. John then became the Senior Vice President of Corporate Development at Battelle Memorial Institute where he worked to help that organization expand their business model beyond government contracts to include commercial strategic and product development solutions. After becoming President of JMAC, the personal holding company for the McConnell family, he worked with the McConnells and the community to secure the NHL franchise, Columbus Blue Jackets. John became President and Chief Operating Officer of Worthington Industries in 2000 before retiring in 2008 to take care of Linda, who suffered from a debilitating illness until her death a year ago. John loved and adored his family, especially as a doting grandfather while suggesting his grandchildren call him JC. He is survived by his three children and their families all in Columbus, Robert Morgan (Erica) Christie, Lindsey Taylor (Tyler) Burt, Sara Jo (Norm) Harbison; grandchildren, Carsen Jane and Joshua Cole Christie; Hazel Jo, John Harpham and Molly Margaret Burt; and Austin James Harbison. John is also survived by his brother, Robert James (Chris) Christie and his wife, Marcia Emens Christie of McConnelsville; his sister, Mary Christie McIntyre, her husband, John F. McIntyre; nieces and nephews; and Linda's mother, Sara Prater. John's civic contributions are numerous as he served on the boards of I Know I Can, Franklin University, Ohio Public Works Commission, Battelle Pension Management and Investment Council, and as a founding member and longest serving chair of the Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority. He was a board member of the Crane Group, Fishel Company, Citizens National Bank, Arlington Bank, The Lakes Golf and Country Club, Geosafe Corp., Information Dimensions, and his most cherished, being a member and President of Miami University's Board of Trustees. John also was a member of Upper Arlington Rotary club, founding member of the daily fees club, and founding member of the MNF (Monday Night Football) club. John's incredible spirit, smile and laugh will be missed by all who knew him. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone looking for advice or help. John enjoyed helping those starting out in their career to find their way and he liked being able to connect people. All of his golfing buddies will miss having him in their foursome as he made every round a great round. Family will receive friends to celebrate John's life at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd. on Saturday, October 19 from 1-5p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation, 200 W. Nationwide Blvd., Columbus, OH 43215, www.bluejackets.com/community or to The Upper Arlington Education Foundation, 1950 North Mallway Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43221. I had no idea John passed away, I just found out last night. My condolences to his entire family! I used to be a caregiver for Linda and I would have frequent conversations with John. We used to have passionate debates on life issues, politics etc. He was a good man who loved Linda dearly, he gave up his whole life to take care of her. May their souls rest in peace.

It seems like only yesterday we met at Miami University. In many respects, notwithstanding his lifelong achievements, John remained that 20 year old college kid you loved to be around.
You've left us too early John, but with many terrific memories and stories to tell. Rest In Peace

John Christie taught me how to work in Corporate America at AmeriTrust Bank, a lead bank out of Cleveland. Ohio. He believed in education and promoting from within. I was promoted to a Branch Supervisor from a teller. He invited staff to his home for holiday office parties. I honor the life of John S. Christie.

Morgan, Lindsey and Sara Jo,
I am so very sorry to know that your Dad will no longer
be with us in this lifetime. He was an exceptional man who enjoyed life, especially his family and close friends. I was fortunate to have worked for him at the Columbus Chamber and be able to call him a long time friend.
Your dad will be missed, but his accomplishments and memories will live forever.
I am sorry I am out of town for his Memorial Service next week, as I will be attending your Dad's alma mater, Miami
University of Ohio. My condolences to you and your families at this time. Your dad spoke volumes of your own accomplishments and wonderful children. He was very proud!
Affectionately,

I knew John from McConnelsville and remember him as a very nice, friendly, level headed man who was going to succeed in what ever he attempted. He did do that!!! I talked to him over the years, since I also live in Columbus, and yes he was successful, but in the most important things, family and friends he was most successful.
My condolences to all of you who knew him and especially to his family, Chris, Mary and their families.

John was President of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce when I was employed by the Columbus Development Department, and became part of a three-way partnership between the Chamber, the City, and the U.S. Department of Commerce, to promote international business development.

Our goal was to help small-to-medium-sized businesses enter or expand their participation in the international marketplace.

John was an excellent leader and encourager to our small staff. We received frequent "pats on the back" for jobs well done, and he was always fair-minded and kind to all.

I remember attending a Christmas party for the entire Chamber staff hosted by he and Linda at their home. They were so thoughtful and gracious to all of us.

John had one phone rule we all had to follow at the Chamber. He made sure that no matter who was calling, or what they wanted, we'd better make sure we picked up the phone, whether it was ours or someone else's, before it rang for the 5th time!

John will always be a wonderful inspiration, sadly missed by all who worked with him, and never forgotten.

God's Blessings to his family.

Hello,
My name is Gail Hogan, and I'm a former news reporter and anchor in Columbus. I am saddened to hear of the passing of John. My sympathies to all of John's family. I first met John when I was a young reporter and he arrived as the president of the Columbus Chamber in the mid 80's. Right from the start I knew he was an honest guy, forthright and always a pleasure to work with. Over the years I interviewed him many times because of his wonderful community involvement. My thanks to his family for sharing John with Columbus. He will be missed.

Mr. Christie was one of my favorite customers here at the GetGo. Last Christmas he did something for me and my children that made our holidays happier for them and easier for me. He loved telling me about his grandkids, because I have three sons of similar ages. He would laugh when I'd say, "I have another picture to show you!" and he'd respond "Probably a picture of the baby eating something!" I looked forward to seeing him, even though he scolded me for smoking cigarettes. He wanted to help me quit, and once told me, "You know I am a friend who will help you with anything." I am absolutely devastated by his passing. John, you were such a good man and I will miss you so much.

I was barely acquainted with him, as he was a year ahead of me and we ran with different circles at Morgan HS. But I see by the tributes via his obituary and testimonies you folks have posted, that John has left quite a far reaching legacy within the most important accomplishment in life: relationships. My condolences to you all... and especially to his family, Chris, Mary and their families.

So very sorry for the loss of your Father.

You were so fortunate to have such wonderful, outgoing parents. They were both such a joy to be around.

Lloyd thought so much of John as John was growing up and his association with Citizens National Bank in McConnelsville.

He was such a saint caring for Linda through her long illness but with so much love.

You will have many happy times to remember.

So sad to hear of John's passing. Linda was one of my best friends in high school and I was a bridesmaid at their wedding!
I can't believe they are gone! My deepest sympathy and prayers to the family.

I worked with John at the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. He was the absolute role model of what a person-centered leader should be.

I remember John always carried his daily schedule on colored index cards in his suit coat pocket. I picked up that habit and although today's calendars are electronic, I still carry index cards with me every day in my jacket for notes and jotting down ideas.

Prayers for the entire family.

John was an anchor for all of us at Miami University during the depths of the recession as chair of the Board of Trustees. His confidence and optimism, and belief in the University, reflected his incredible leadership skills. He was a wonderful friend whose humor and warmth always made our time together special. I especially enjoyed our occasional lunches in Columbus after his time on the Board. He was an incredible individual who will be greatly missed

I was his executive secretary at Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce. My family was young at that time and knew him also. We all grieve for his and Linda's family.

His dedication to job and community coupled with his outgoing personality, unquestioned ability and loyalty made him an asset in his career and a caring friend to all who knew him.

Sadly, the last time we met was at Linda's calling.

Twenty-plus years ago, JC, Favs and Trevor joined Kent, Dave Penzone and myself for a golf trip to Pinehurst. It became an annual highlight for all of us. Never was there a partner who rode you harder (especially if your putting was suspect) nor a better teammate.

He was truly, truly a great man.

John Christie always wanted to make things better. I had the honor and pleasure knowing John and his late wife Linda. They both liked to help things along and make changes when they saw ways to make things better.
Early on in my career, while I was still trying to get squared away and working night and day to get financially secure, John offered an piece of advice. At a break between business meetings he did some back of the envelope calculations and said, "You can afford to blow X amount of money every year to do those things with your kids that make happy memories. Otherwise, you will miss the best years of your life by waiting for tomorrow and some day you will regret what you missed." I took that advice; it changed the lives of my children and I; and we did indeed make treasured memories. I know John did the same in his life and his adventures with his family will be the most treasured memories. John will never be forgotten by the many of us he helped along the way.
