Alan R. Mueller, age 79, went to be with the Lord on September 9, 2017. He was born August 1, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Charles and Esther Mueller. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Dennis of Rockford, Illinois, and Warren (Diane) of Bay Village, Ohio and his loving wife of 45 years, Joy. He is survived by his devoted wife, Caryl Mueller; sons, Kurt and Glenn; step-daughters, Natalie Erdman and Gena (Mike) Stickelman of Vandalia, Ohio; granddaughter, Emily Sheets of Westerville; step-granddaughters, Ashley (Danny) Hemphill of Fairborn, Ohio, Brittney (Josh) Coy of Abilene, Texas; grandsons, Noah and Knox Hemphill of Fairborn, Ohio; sister in-law, Janet Bunch of Dayton, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. Alan graduated from Carter Harrison High School, Chicago, 1956. He earned is B.A. degree in Business Management from Northwestern University. He was very active in Boy Scouts and Sea Explorer in Cicero, Illinois. Alan was drafted into the Army after high school. He was assigned to the U.S. Army Intelligence School. In the service, he enjoyed his duties in the Office of the Director of Instruction. He was employed by Ogden Hardware, Sears Roebuck Company in Chicago, where was part of the opening management team at Sears Distribution Center in Columbus in 1972, and as a manager of Big Lots Stores. Alan was a member of The Perishing Rifles Fraternity; Capital City Lodge No. 656 F&AM, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus; and Aladdin Temple Shrine. Also, he was a charter member of the Indian Run United Methodist Church, Dublin, Ohio. In recent years, Alan enjoyed gardening and travel with his wife Caryl to places he always wanted to see. This included his favorite childhood campground in Wisconsin. Also, he enjoyed working on his "N" scale railroad projects. One of his proudest achievements was the train layout he created in their basement. He shared it with family, friends, and anyone who would listen. Friends may call on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. at the HOPE & HEART FUNERAL HOME BY SCHOEDINGER, 3030 West Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43204. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Columbia Heights United Methodist Church, 775 Galloway Road, Galloway, Ohio 43119. Pastor Nathan Custer officiating.
