BROEKEMA Andrew J. Broekema died Saturday, July 30, 2005 in The Ohio State Medical Center. He was born in 1931 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret of Dublin, Ohio: daughter, Anne (Jim) Cassady: grandson, James Andrew Bush of Columbus, Ohio: brothers, Howard (Maxine) and Kenneth (Dorothy) of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned the B.M. and M.M. degrees from the University of Michigan where he was an Oliver Ditson Scholar. He was the first recipient of the PhD in Musicology to be awarded by the University of Texas at Austin. He taught or served in administrative roles at the University of Texas, Eastern Kentucky University, Arizona State University and the Ohio State University from which he retired as Dean/Professor emeritus in the College of the Arts. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and honoraries including Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Mu Alpha, Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Kappa Psi, National Society of Literature and Arts, TBDBITL and the Ohio Staters. He is included in Who's Who in America and in 1993 was awarded the Ohio State University Distinguished Service Award. In 1998 he was the recipient of the Ohio State University School of Music Distinguished Service Award. He was a past President of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans and served on the boards of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Museum of Art, Opera Columbus and was a past president of the Greater Columbus Arts Council. He was a member of the Review Club and the Columbus Torch Club. He served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church, USA. A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Rd., Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. Family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at Covenant Presbyterian Church and following the memorial service. Cremation Arrangements made by SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., Columbus. In lieu of flowers, if they wish, friends may make contributions in his name to the Endowment Fund of Covenant Presbyterian Church, or The OSU Foundation, 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210 for either The Education Department of the Wexner Center for the Arts, fund #309257, or the OSU Cardiac Rehabilitation Patient Scholarship Fund, fund # 306026.
