Barbara King Obituary
King, Barbara
1938 - 2017
Barbara Leff King, age 79, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 13, 2017. She was born in Dayton, Ohio on September 25, 1938. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Richard J. King, her parents J.J. Leff and Florence Leff (née Nelligan) and her sister Joan Hamilton (née Leff). Barb was a graduate of the Julienne Catholic High School in Dayton and the University of Dayton. A tenacious and passionate champion of women's rights, Barb King was a feminist before it was mainstream. She served as a board member of the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus. A veracious reader, she has been a member of many book clubs and organized her own investment club for women. Along with advocating for women's issues, Barb was also very civically-minded and is well-known for preserving Thompson Park, which was being designated for building construction. Along with being a treasured friend to many, Barb was also a Licensed Social Worker and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. Through her efforts as a counselor, she gave support and hope to so many struggling with addiction, especially women. Just one example of her efforts was serving as the Director of the Maryhaven Women's Program in the 1980's. She also served on the Board of Directors at Maryhaven Inc. for many years. In recent years, she used her social work skills volunteering at the Suicide Prevention Hotline. A life-long passion for needlepoint led Barb to purchase Louise's Needlework in Dublin Ohio in 1992, again encouraging groups of women to come together. She owned the shop for 12 years. She is survived by her sons, John (Karla), Michael (Monique); granddaughters, Emma, Audrey, Margot, Elise, and Lucy; brother, David (Pat); sister, Janet Leff; brother, William (Kathy); many nieces and nephews and friends. No one loved a party more than Barb, therefore a celebration of her life will be held on Friday, December 8 from 2-5 pm at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio 43221. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Suicide Prevention Hotline, North Central Mental Health Services, 1301 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio 43201.
