Charles E. "Charlie" McKnight Jr. Obituary
McKnight Charles "Charlie" E. McKnight Jr., 93, of Waverly, died Thursday, March 30, 2017. Born in New Boston, Ohio on November 12, 1923, to Charles L. and Ruth E. (Blume) McKnight. A 1941 graduate of Valley High School in Lucasville, Oh., Mr. McKnight was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran 1943-45, served as a Motor Transport driver in the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division, and deployed to the European theater in Italy. He was assigned to a Casualty Battalion and transported soldiers between front lines and field hospitals. In September 2014, Charles traveled to Washington DC on an Honor Flight Columbus trip and visited several memorials including the WWII Memorial. After WWII, he attended The Ohio State University and married Kathleen Campbell of Lucasville, OH on December 23, 1950. Kathleen preceded Charles in death on February 28, 1994. In the 1950's, he opened and operated Pike Auto Sales in Waverly and drove a school bus for Waverly City Schools. Survivors include children, Julia Pittenger of Wellston, OH, Karen (Thomas) Tiefert of Indianapolis, IN, Lois (James) Rapp of Waverly, OH, John of Pace, FL and Debbi (John) Saczawa of Powell, Oh. He had 12 grandchildren, and several in-laws, nephews, nieces and cousins. In addition to his wife and parents, Charles was preceded in death by three sons Byron, Paul and Charles, a brother George McKnight, sister Delores McKnight Hibshman, his companion of 20 years, Elizabeth Shoemaker, and son-in-law Eldon Pittenger. Visitation will be Thursday, April 6 at 5-8 p.m. and memorial service on Friday at 10 a.m. at BOTKIN HORNBACK FUNERAL HOME in Waverly. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Mr. McKnight and his military service to the Honor Flight Columbus, www.honorflightcolumbus.org, P.O.
