Donald E. "Don" Hafey, of Columbus, went to be with the Lord early December 4, 2017. He was the son of the late Edward and Carrie Hafey. He was born in Duvall, OH and spent many years in the Lockbourne, Ohio area. Preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and sisters Marie Sprang and Dorothy Lindig. Don graduated from Hamilton Township High School in 1944. He served in the Army during WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was trapped behind enemy lines for 3 weeks. Don was transferred to the 3rd Armored Division then the 1st Armored Division as a tank commander under General Patton. At the end of the war, Don was transferred to the HQ Troop 68th Constabulary Squad until his honorable discharge. He received many medals for his service, including a Bronze Star. Don worked for 56 years in the lumber and building supply business. He was employed at Smith Dotson, Wickes Lumber, Grove City Lumber, and Obetz Hardware where he took his 3rd and final retirement at age 78. Wickes Lumber honored him with Top Manager of the Year title 6 times in a 10 year period. He attended both Capital University and the Ohio State University. Don loved watching OSU football and basketball, Cincinnati Reds baseball, and Cleveland Cavaliers basketball. He was a longtime member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Obetz where he held many positions on the church council and loved playing dartball. Past member of Saint Matthews Lutheran Church in Lockbourne. Don was a life member of the American Legion, specifically Robert Dutro Post 486 of Groveport where he was a past commander. Don was an avid woodworker. He loved building cabinets and toys out of wood. He also enjoyed photography and tending his roses. Don is survived by three sons, Charles of Dallas, TX, Martin (Peggy) of Lockbourne, OH, and Paul (Michelle) also of Dallas, TX; 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister, Kate Bumgardner of Grove City; brother, Herman (Betty) Hafey of Columbus; brother-in-law, Richard Sprang of Spartanburg, SC; many nieces, nephews, and other family. Don will also be missed by his very special neighbors on his street. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the O.R. WOODYARD CO SOUTH CHAPEL, 1346 South High St. The funeral will be held on Saturday, December 9 at 10:30 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church in Obetz, 1080 Obetz Rd, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Matthew Cox officiating. Contributions in Don's name may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Obetz.
