Doris Hale Obituary
Hale, Doris
1925 - 2017
Doris Mildred Hale, 91, of Bexley, Ohio, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 17, 2017, at her Bexley home with her husband of 70 years by her side. She recently had undergone surgery for a fractured hip after a fall at home. Doris was born to the late Zelpha and Logan Perry and grew up in the south end of Columbus. She was the third of eight children and the oldest of six girls. She attended South High School, graduating in the class of 1943, where she met her beloved husband, Bill Hale. Doris dedicated her life to her husband, family and the nursing profession. During World War II, with a shortage of nurses at home, Doris enrolled in U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps where she graduated from the Grant Hospital Nursing School with the class of 1946 . Throughout her life she stayed connected to her nursing school classmates attending luncheons and playing bingo with them once a month. Her nursing career was spent entirely at St. Anthony's Medical Center, now OSU East in Columbus, where she managed the surgery recovery room and later worked as the nurse educator, teaching hundreds of clinicians still practicing today. She was known for her kindness and caring ways always instilling value and self-worth to each student no matter what their clinical or educational levels. She was beloved by her students and colleagues. Patient care and helping others was her number one priority. She had multiple children and grandchildren who followed her lead into the field of healthcare resulting in two generations of Hale family members dedicating their lives to the nursing profession. Doris loved working in her garden and would often deliver flowers from her yard to sick family, friends and patients to brighten their hospital stay. She was an avid baker of cookies and desserts and many in Columbus and beyond, looked forward to her specially prepared tins of homemade treats every Christmas. Doris is survived by her husband Wm. B. (Bill) Hale, age 93. She is preceded in death by siblings Richard Smith, Lloyd Perry, Dorothy Garwich and Grace Fisher. She is survived by sisters, Jessie Port, Thelma Bugh and Ruth Weber; children Kathy Hale Boston of Westerville, Ohio; William (Michael) Hale (Ruthie) of Camarillo, CA; Greg Hale of Titusville, Florida; Steve Hale, Columbus, Ohio and six grandchildren; Jeanette Hale Gates, Jason Cryder, Cindy Boston Gold, Brian Hale, Melissa Boston and Karen Rothermel. 9 great-grandchildren Bryan Gates, Erin Gates, Ben Cryder, Zackery Cryder, Katie Boston Gold, Bryson Hale, Chase Polley, Jacob Hale and Madison Hale. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, July 23, 2017, at Woodyard East Chapel, 2300 E. Livingston Ave from 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Doris Hale Nursing Scholarship Fund through the Columbus Medical Association Foundation, 1390 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43215, or online at www.cmafohio.org/donatenow.
